Monsters, Inc.
This is gonna be a hot take but the rewatch devaluation of Monsters Inc was kind of on par with Nolan films… This movie will always have an amazing concept and fun characters and fantastic creative execution however my 10/10 opinions from memory have tanked a bit. I have the same issue with this one as I do with many of Pete Docter’s other films (with the exception of Up and WALL-E although I now think I need to revisit those too): there’s an emptiness to the melodrama that I can’t put a finger on. I’ll come back to this when I can articulate it better but for now it’s just dissatisfying and missing something for me. The emotional drive feels too heavy-handed. The final impression is diluted and short-lasting. Sometimes I can’t feel it right away because his ideas and world-building are just too awesome and unique but inevitably I start noticing it as the story goes on

All About Lily Chou-Chou
no thoughts, just music through a walkman that transports you to the ether — green fields, endless skies, sound swelling, soul aching… really cool lighting & shots throughout. i’m not a huge shunji iwai fan but this one hit me hard. music is so intricately tied to memories. sometimes the escape itself is the very reason you need to escape

Kokuho
ambition so subtle it almost feels passive, yet everything in its path is inevitably destroyed. many parallels to black swan & farewell my concubine, but the violence is quiet, the obsession methodical, the sacrifices deadpan. while through kikuo’s pov it feels like art/kabuki is only a means to chase the ultimate high (and, on a deeper level, survival & purpose), the film presents art/kabuki as having value in itself — it takes center stage always; the characters, the egos, all fade away when the curtains lift.
