Give Me My Chance
Kind of predictable industry critique, dad always knew best. The female self-determination starts of really promising, but the whole plot settles into the usual, least interesting paths fairly quickly. Naive provincial girl does naive things and finds out. At least the scenes of female camaraderie and solidarity against a patriarchal system are quite enjoyable.
Last Romance
The friendship between the two main characters was somewhat more interesting to me than the romance, although the latter is certainly not bad either. Ultimately, it's very much a film of its time: Hong Kong at the height of its capitalism, status symbols, and an escalating housing market with an uncertain political future. Some bits were a bit too talky for my taste, but every now and then it finds a sense of calm that reminded me a lot of the Taiwanese New Wave. Well-executed film by romance veteran Yonfan.
