Fine concept, bad execution and great set design average out to a mediocre yet charming movie. My biggest gripe with it is how unsure it is about what it wants to be: the set design and overall tone means it's a children's movie, but then it also has swears and a completely unnecessary sex scene as well as military satire that children wouldn't get. On the other hand, it doesn't do well enough with its message or makes its characters fleshed-out enough for adults to remain entertained. The pacing is also weirdly slow for a movie where basically everyone has untreated ADHD. Toys is never able to be taken seriously despite really trying to at times due to how inherently silly it is, but it also fails at being truly whimsical. It should have gone all in with the surrealism and liminal feeling instead of trying and failing to be grounded. Despite all that I can't help myself but liking it too much for 2.5 stars.

Le film d'animation le plus beau que j'ai vu de ma vie, avec une histoire qui m'a assez touché pour me faire couler quelques larmes, le tout avec un subtil commentaire sur le traumatisme intergénérationel et les conflits de nationalité. Chaque image atteste de la qualité d'une illustration professionelle sans jamais faire de compromis sur la complexité des éléments ou l'harmonie des couleurs. Mon film préféré de l'année, et de loin.

The Lego Batman Movie

L’autre film Lego qui s’est révélé bien meilleur que l’on aurait cru. Tout comme le film Lego de 2014, celui-ci est entièrement fait en Lego, pas en modèles 3D “normaux” avec des personnages Lego comme les films des années 2000. Il est aussi extrêmement drôle et fun, en particulier si l’on est familier avec l’univers Batman, auquel le film fait de nombreuses références. Mais la meilleure chose à propos de ce film est l’histoire : bien que ce soit une comédie, le film entier est une réflexion métatextuelle de l’univers de Batman, et tout comme il n’a pas peur d’être ridicule, il n’hésite pas non plus à être honnête et à rendre les personnages plus attachants que la plupart des autres films sur ce personnage. En bonus, on a jamais été aussi proche d’une histoire d’amour officielle entre Batman et le Joker, qui sont incroyablement non-subtils sur ce plan.

The Lego Movie

Lorsque La grande aventure Lego sort, tout le monde pense qu’il s’agit d’un coup de pub sans aucune ambition artistique afin de se faire de l’argent sur le dos des enfants. Finalement, le film s’avère être un produit inventif et extrêmement fun à regarder, en plus d’avoir un humour surprenamment drôle pour un film avant tout destiné à des enfants. L’histoire est intéressante mais l’aspect le plus important de ce film est sans aucun doute les graphismes : le plan original était de tout construire et de faire un film en stop-motion, mais même pour un studio de cinéma, ce projet était trop ambitieux et il fallut animer le film en 3D. Néanmoins, chaque pièce que vous voyez, chaque seconde du film peut en théorie être construite avec des briques Lego. Les crédits de fin sont en stop-motion par contre. Malheureusement, la suite n’est pas aussi bonne à mon goût.
