Requiem for a Dream

Requiem for a Dream

well I never thought that I would watch this movie ever again but after a few drug induced revelations here I am. this movie has stuck with me so vividly after watching it the first time and it’s a movie I can truly say I haven’t stopped thinking about ever since I first watched it. any bad drug experience has also probably made me think about this movie in one way or another. and it’s interesting because when I first watched this movie I had smoked before, I enjoyed being high, on sum cool shit. but for where i’m at now in life, this movie felt way more relatable in different ways. now i’ve never done cocaine or injected myself with anything, the most i’ve done is some psychedelics but the relatable part isn’t necessarily the specific drugs themselves. i wouldn’t say i’m addicted to weed or anything but on a base level, the desire to be high, the willingness in the lengths you’ll go to in order to get high, etc, i get it. i’ve seen it and i’ve lived it. there’s also this thing within the theme of addiction that you begin to use drugs for escape. many times in this movie we see a character tweak out, get high, then they’re instantly chilling. and at the time of my first watch i don’t think i had experienced that at first. but i understand now the feeling that your life is shit, and then you get high and all that shit goes away. everything feels simpler and easier when you’re high, things that might’ve fucked you up sober now ricochet off you.  the thing about the addiction to drugs and i guess being addicted to anything really is that it becomes to the answer to EVERYTHING. these clearly are not just your average weed smokers who like to get high cause it’s fun. the drugs make them tolerate themselves when they look into the mirror, it helps them communicate intimate emotions, it’s literally the only thing that keeps them going throughout the day. it’s not even the relationships they’ve built with each other that are really giving them life because it seems like the foundation of any relationship in this movie is based on the likeminded mentality of doing drugs. everything is more potent on the drug, the depressive emotions get suppressed, you’re literally on a high, it’s the answer to everything. i think ellen burstyn’s character, sara goldfarb, adds a lot of depth to this movie too. for her, it’s not just this addiction to drugs, there’s this desire for things in life. she has a void, she wants to be on tv, she wants to have the best seat on the block, she wants to be skinny, she misses her husband, she’s depressed, she’s delusional, she’s desperate, and she’s lonely. i think sara is addicted to love. the most important thing is that she’s lonely, that spirals her into wanting acceptance in any way she can get it. her being on tv would give her immense validation, she wants people to see her and call her pretty and say wow. she wants her husband back. she wishes her son was around more. she wants mail bro, fucking mail. ANYTHING to make her feel wanted by someone which is why the happiest moment we see in this movie of her is when Harry comes to visit her because in that moment she feels thought about. and i think her portion of the story shows how much control your mind has over you.  on top of all these thoughts i thought everything in this movie was executed perfectly in my opinion. i don’t think there’s a bad acting performance in this, everyone is phenomenal. i love the style of this movie, the fast cuts, accents & lingo, intimate sound design, landscape, overall editing, etc. there’s a lot of great cinematography in this that i think like makes you feel EVERYTHING the characters do. this might be my favorite darren aronofsky movie. another thing i think this movie excels in is showing vs telling. like this movie is in your face but it doesn’t over explain things in my opinion. i’ve never seen a movie like this before, i don’t think there will ever be another movie like this, flawless.

“Why do rich people always like to say they’re middle class” wow, ended up loving this more than I thought I would. at first I thought it was a bit amateurish but i still enjoyed what the overall movie was going for and to be honest I think I judged the movie that way a bit prematurely. I didn’t know how I felt about the color grading at first, and as time went on I realized I enjoyed it for example even though it did feel a bit too Netflix-y. just to start off, I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack for this movie. deadass all bangers no misses. we had Mac Miller, Outkast, The Killers, Alex G, Charli XCX, etc. this was a very gen z movie, which at times I liked and other times it kinda fell flat but i’ll be honest I think the movie was progressively getting better and funnier so a lot of times the gen z references were funny to me. which brings me to my next point about how much I laughed? I didn’t necessarily have an expectation for this movie, from the little I knew before going into it I just expected to like it cause it seemed up my alley, which it was, but I didn’t expect to laugh as much as I did. once again, I think the enjoyment of a comedy movie is based on how much it makes you laugh and so if you didn’t find this movie funny at all then it’s gonna suck for you. however, I laughed through the whole movie so it was great for me. I thought Nick Kroll was funny in all his scenes + him and Natasha had great chemistry as parents. the pitch perfect reference was great, i loved it, also really funny. Danny Brown blasting in the party caught me off guard, but was also funny to me. The guy singing drivers license in the middle of the pool party, funny. The reoccurring bit with the girl who’s boyfriend keeps calling her was hilarious. And there’s so many more moments. Once again the movie got progressively better for me so by the end of it all, I think the acting was great all around the board. I liked the “grass is greener on the other side” trope they had going on for a minute, I thought it was interesting how Celeste and Devon were both jealous of others things the other person had a point, although later on it became way more one sided. But I thought that provided some depth. There were good callbacks all around, the editing was solid, the movie was just fun to experience. At the end of the day man, fuck celeste, megan thee stallion was unexpected asf, and thank you Sarah Sherman. Chandler is 2/2 in my book, really excited to watch Mile End Kicks now. wait that was Adam Sandlers daughter?

watched this on dvd which i got a few weeks ago. it’s good, the second half expands on everything from the first half in a nice way. although it is a bit slow and struggled to keep my attention the whole movie, it was enjoyable. every Scorsese movie i’ve watched so far always just seems like its in it’s own world and this was no exception. i’m definitely falling in love with Marty’s direction, it sticks out to me in a way that not many other directors have.

oh my god this sexy ass movie. goes to show how much you can accomplish in 90 minutes. i love the direction in this movie, marty put allat scorsussy in this one, AND out of the 3 movies i’ve seen from him so far (taxi driver, shutter island, and now after hours) i like this one the most. i knew absolutely nothing about this movie or who was in it, all i knew was that it was a shorter movie from Martin Scorsese and I liked the movie poster, so I truly had no expectations for this movie which is always best, I was well surprised. man where to start, the acting is great, the story is so well written, the overall look of this movie is amazing. i love the way the storylines intersect as the movie progresses. the callbacks are great and earned. i love the harsh sound design of older movies, this has that. the colors in this movie are really good. the score lives on throughout a lot of this movie but it never really feels like it’s in the way. overall this was a great movie, i debated on giving this a high 4 but the ending milked the 4.5 out of me. Casino & Raging Bull next up. RIP CATHERINE O’HARA 💔

definitely a movie that i wish i watched for the first time while high, but i definitely plan on rewatching it sometime in the future so i’ll be sure to do that then. i thought this was a very fun movie. i laughed a lot, i was surprised at all the comedic appearances, and i liked all the different subgenre elements blended into this film. i did indeed enjoy this movie a lot more than i thought i would. this is the type of character i wanna see gaten matarazzo play more often.  also the bechdel test sticky note was funny and i thought the meta ending was hilarious

you know, towards the beginning of the movie i didn’t really love the style and everything, but as the movie progressed and made me chuckle a few times it started to grow on me. I like the editing, I like the wide shots, I like how awkward Patty is, and really the best way I can describe this movie is quirky, cute, and charming. I feel like i’ll have more fun thinking about this movie than actually watching it, but the second watch might actually hit more because of that. Didn’t know this was the same director as Snack Shack, which I do think is a much better movie, but that’s cool. #thenerdsarealwaysfreaks❤️

The Drama

The Drama

wow man, wow. A24 has a really great eye for films and if that somehow wasn’t evident already then this was sure to confirm it. I don’t think I really have anything bad to say about this movie? This shit was great, like really great. I know there’s a spoiler button on here, but ima be honest witchu i’m not clicking that shit, if u didn’t watch the movie don’t read this review.  To start off, I think the promo for this movie was really good. The interviews made me interested to see what they kept dodging around, the trailer kept me hooked, all the photos and aesthetic intrigued me even more, everything was on par. I’ve never seen a movie from this director either so I didn’t know what to expect in that regard but I had high hopes for the movie to be good based on everything else I knew about it, and I wasn’t disappointed.  The soundtrack is great, the songs I knew and the ones I didn’t, all were great. I wanna highlight how good Zendaya looks on the big screen but tbh this whole cast is attractive besides Rachel. This is what they call uhh bi-panic right? Idk something like that.  From the way the movie starts and gets into things, it’s already interesting. The double date dinner scene towards the beginning is obviously one of the most important scenes in the film, and I was truly invested from there. That’s when I started really thinking “hmm this shit is really good.” Also unimportant side note, but I couldn’t believe Mike and Rachel were married to each other and not gay, I was almost certain.   First off, drawing any comparison between doing heroin and being a pedophile is like so off, it’s such two different things 😭 and it was actually kinda funny because Zendaya’s character had the exact same reaction as me. Speaking of funny, this movie is lowkey hilarious. There was a lot of moments I laughed, and like really laughed, not a pity laugh. For example, the wedding photographer lady going down the list of people she wants to “shoot” had me crying. The replacement DJ guy was also funny. Etc etc. Another thing that was a lil funny, prolly only to me, is that at the beginning it didn’t even feel like Robert Pattinson was acting, he was just playing himself 😭.  Which kinda brings me into my next thing which is the performances. I think Robert Pattinson actually had one of if not THE best performance in this movie. Next to him obviously i’d give it to Zendaya, they both did really good. This made me want to see more Zendaya, I gotta do a Zendaya marathon.  Now for the real important talking points of the movie. I’m interested to see the discourse and discussion around this movie, because I know where I stand and I honestly have no idea what other people’s stances will be. I’m team Emma man. At first, when we find out she planned to do the whole school shooting thing and everyone at the dinner table was tripping, I was like it’s kinda understandable on Emma’s behalf though. She was 15 and super depressed, shit happens. She definitely went hella far with it and that’s sum fucked up shit, but she obviously seems to be far removed from that mindset now so why judge super hard for something so old. And then you have Rachel who’s acting like Emma shot her cousin. How the fuck was she supposed to know your cousin is in a wheelchair?? Anyways, once the movie progressed, finding out what really prevented Emma from going through with her plan is what kinda made me think some things over. The fact that it was only because another shooting happened that stopped her made me think about where I stood after that, but I still came to the conclusion that it’s not the end of the world. I don’t think that makes her un-marriable. Maybe postpone the wedding, have some talks, go thru some counseling or therapy or whatever you need to do, and work it out, but I wouldn’t have just not married her anymore. If you had no strange vibe of her being weird or a possible school shooter before that confession then that should tell you she’s in a better place now. She’s not onnat shit no more. And although she did lie about why she couldn’t hear initially, it is kinda sum shit to lie about? Maybe you don’t want to mention off rip that you were planning a school shooting in high school and that’s why you can’t hear fr. That’s an understandable reason to lie. Imagine you were Emma, what do you feel in this moment? Your fiancée starts looking scared of you. Rachel is being a bitch. And you know that moment is just in the past and you’ve probably battled with it so much on your own so getting judged years later for it like it’s something you want do right now has to be super heavy. And it was, we saw that.  So yeah, I stand with Emma. This movie just got progressively better and better in my opinion. From Charlie cheating, to his wedding speech, to the ending part where they reintroduce themselves again, i mean cmon. The whole scene from Charlie asking Misha the “hypothetical” question about the mass shooting, to them pretty much hooking up was super crazy to me. In a way, it felt like it paralleled Emma’s situation. Strictly from the standpoint of, Charlie almost made a decision, a mistake, but he didn’t follow through. It begs the question, is having the thought just as bad or even close to being as bad as the action itself? I mean he kissed her and bent her over, that’s definitely cheating, that’s damn near a body. Then Misha coming in the room later on and confessing her and Charlie did something but she doesn’t even really know that’s not the conversation, omg, I was cringing, but I loved that the movie was making me feel something. Every moment just made me more and more interested in what was going to happen next. Charlie’s wedding speech made me feel the same. Few more things, the direction was really good. Great camerawork, great shots, lots of reallllyy good misdirection, and it was very well edited. I like how everything was visible. The tension, the emotions, the everything. I actually think the only thing I could critique about this movie is them needing to get a better younger version of Zendaya. The acting from who they chose was great, but they could’ve found a better lookalike for sure. Overall, this shit was really fire, it made me smile, it made me think, and it truthfully had me on the edge of my seat and on edge in general. I think this could definitely turn into a 5/5 on rewatch. I’m excited to see the other movies coming out this year, shit is looking stacked. Also another thing this movie accomplished was that it did indeed spark discussion amongst me and my friends. I think all movies are better at theaters or with friends at least, but I’d definitely recommend you and your friends go see this movie in theaters together. I wonder what Charli XCX thinks of this movie.

Interesting movie to say the least, and i’m kind of conflicted on whether or not I liked it. First, let me start with the things I did like. 1. Rachel Mcadams is a gift to the world, I love her. 2. I like the close up shots, that was something that was in The Substance that I really enjoyed, and I wish it was utilized more throughout this film. 3. Rachel Mcadams’ character look 4. It’s a well directed movie from start to finish 5. The gore Now for my “complaints”: I wasn’t the biggest fan of some of the campy elements of this film. There’s no fucking way an airplane seatbelt is keeping you that secure when the plane itself has been torn apart by the wind?? Then for my main complaint which is the character arcs. Why no help!? It doesn’t feel like there’s a good enough answer as to why Linda did what she did except for the fact that maybe she’s just lonely and sick in the head, but it’s like bro i don’t wanna sit down for two hours just to find out she’s crazy and that’s it. Linda finds some nice ass house and got attached to I guess the island and Bradley’s company and now she doesn’t wanna leave anymore. Lowkey I feel like the movie would’ve been better if the audience knew from the beginning and we just watched Linda fall deeper into her craziness. Why didn’t explore her escapades in the house more? Why doesn’t she want to show Bradley the house so they could both at least chill there? Idk it just feels like all this shit is happening cause Linda’s just kinda evil to be evil. And all her weird quirks that I liked about her just make her more weird and evil with this newfound information. But they’re still tryna make Bradley the bad guy, and yes he’s an asshole, but he’s not a pyscho murderer. Now since i’ve sat and thought about the movie for a little bit i’ve come up with some explanations for this complaint but it still doesn’t make it that much better for me. I think maybe the point of the movie is a message to the corporate lifestyle to make a statement that says “be nice to your coworkers and employees.” Maybe it’s a commentary on that, which I guess makes it a bit better than her just being evil to be evil, but it still doesn’t do it for me. I think there was definitely more to be explored in this movie for sure. Overall, it was cool, i liked it for the most part, the ending just kinda sold it for me.

Everybody Wants Some!!

Everybody Wants Some!!

i thought this was my first Richard Linklater movie but I didn’t realize he directed Hit Manso this is my second. I was excited to watch this because everything around it just looks cool + it’s coming of age + good ratings. i’m still on the never ending quest that is finding the best coming of age movie. off rip, i loved the aesthetic of this movie. everything from the fonts, the outfits, the settings, etc. a 2016 movie that’s set in the 80s, fun. i also really enjoyed that since its set in the 80s everything is physical, so seeing vinyls, cassettes, vhs, etc was very cool to the nerd in me. i think the best word you can use to describe this movie is fun. there’s a great representation of male friend groups, a lot of funny moments/quotes, and a fun story to watch unfold for 2 hours. i liked the fact that Jake fit right in with the rest of the group and that they didn’t go with the cliche “new guy struggles to fit in” trope. this movie also made me wanna go to a white boy wasted party, and i watched Project X so that’s saying something. i love Zoey Deutch, i realized that watching this movie, this and Before I Fall, great. I also like Glen Powell, i feel like i’ve seen discourse about him online but between this and Hit Man, i like him. speaking of Glen Powell, there’s a part in this movie where he throws a cupcake at someone and some of the icing smudges the camera lens which i’m not if it was scripted or not but it was fire that they left it in. OVERALL, EXTREMELY FUN, HIGH REPLAY VALUE, I WANT THE DVD!!

Suncoast

okay! i’m here, i’m back to it. the past month or two i’ve been slacking on watching movies, but i think im now ready to get back into the swing of things. this was a movie that i’ve been wanting to watch for probably the past 6 months but kept procrastinating. i’ve said a bunch how much i love coming of age movies, especially summer/summer camp themed ones. honestly i always loved the movie poster for this movie as well as the name alone so i was excited from just that. but overall i thought it would be a good summer kind of movie that was a fun watch. i say all that to say, i wanted to like this movie. now i’ll be honest and say that i don’t think the coming of age genre always breeds the best acting depending on what you base that on, but it’s something that i think i like because of its flaws in a way. sometimes the things that are considered “bad” in a movie are the reason i like it even more. with this movie, i’m sad to say i don’t feel that way. i think it simply comes down to the fact that i don’t think the good outweighs the bad in this. i love Laura Linney, i love Woody Harrelson, but i don’t think they were given the best opportunity here. and i think that’s the main thing about this movie, is that it has most of the right tools in a sense but everything doesn’t land. the dialogue is amateur, the plot is a little too predictable, and the acting reminded me of AwesomenessTv. there’s a way to have simple plots or even characters or EVEN DIALOGUE and still make it interesting but i didn’t feel that here? i didn’t really feel anything for most of the emotional climaxes, or when something happened to Doris, or anything really. now this isn’t to say that there was nothing i liked. i enjoyed the cinematography and the soundtrack. i even enjoyed the basis of the plot and there’s a few different points of the movie i could point to and tell you i enjoyed it. i think overall it just didn’t come together and i'm mainly disappointed because i feel like it could’ve been so much better, so it’s like wasted potential in a way. a movie like Before I Fallis one that i feel like executed similar things in a much better way, not necessarily plot wise but with relationships, dynamics, emotional moments, and making simple things a little more complex or interesting to watch at least. also crazy Baby Ariel jumpscare??

The Talented Mr. Ripley

hello world! i haven’t watched and finished a movie in like a month! yes i feel icky, yes i feel like a fraud, and yes i know my cinephile card has been revoked. I am back though, and although I broke my streak of watching a movie everyday this year, I still plan to hit the number of 365 movies watched this year so bare with me. I kinda impromptu watched this with my sister cause we were tryna find something to watch while we ate, I also started Bottomsearlier this week but I need to finish it. Anywho, this was good! Lowkey already wanna rewatch cause I feel like it’ll hit more on second watch but I liked it. I actually bought this on DVD before having watched it, can’t say i’m mad at the purchase. Here we have a jazz undertoned thriller + a very stacked cast, off rip i’m in. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law play love interests like come onnnn. RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It’s almost like murder in movies is like lying, once you do it once you have to keep doing it to cover up the last one, it’s like no one ever just kills one person. Way too committed to the bit. It was a bit too long and wasn’t completely interesting the whole time, it does pick up once the main part of the movie comes into play though which was about an hour into this almost 2 and a half hour long movie. The performances were good, soundtrack was good, story was good, anywhere between a 3.5 to a 4/5.

One Battle After Another

One Battle After Another

This movie is so completely its own world. Every costume, location, song, and piece of dialogue come together so perfectly to create this world that is One Battle After Another that you’re deeply entrenched in from beginning to end. It seems like everyone apart of this movie is just operating at their absolute best, including PTA and Johnny Greenwood. Leo is so great at being a helpless but determined father, Sean Penn is so good at being angry, creepy, and unsettling, and Regina is very good at being comforting. There’s really no flaws in this movie, and it doesn’t take any time to get good, it’s just off the rails from the beginning. I’ve been wanting to rewatch this movie from the second the credits rolled the first time, and it’s soo equally enjoying the second time around. Although I remember watching this, it feels so fresh and almost like I’ve never seen it before. Like even though I’ve seen it, I still had the feeling of not being able to predict what’s gonna happen next, and that’s how you know a movie is incredible. And amongst all this chaos, the movie makes plenty room to be hilarious. The cinematography is outstanding. I did indeed get the 4k Ultra HD DVD, best $30 ever spent. Just hand em the Oscar already.

12 Angry Men

12 Angry Men

One man’s fate left in the hands of 12 random men, and yes they are very angry. I actually didn’t realize that they kinda just yell at each other the whole time 😭. Anyways, such a simple concept, doesn’t spend more than 3 minutes setting everything up, and yet is one of the best movies i’ve ever seen. This is the perfect example of a timeless movie. I watched it with the family this time, yk Saturday night my momma talm bout she wanted to watch sum but she doesn’t know what. For my birthday, I planned to do a movie marathon thing with them and show my family movies that I think they would like, soo my momma referred back to that list to find something for us to watch. Quickly we all agreed on 12 Angry Men, I was excited not only because this is an amazing movie that I’ve been meaning to rewatch anyway, but of course to see how they engaged and interacted with it. BTW, I also got this movie on DVD not too long ago, Criterion edition, not to flex or anything, but flex. Anywhoozy, my dad and my sister fell asleep literally a few minutes in, didn’t even make it to the first preliminary vote. I’m not sure if they just weren’t interested from the beginning because it was only like 5pm and we’ve been home all day so idrk how they could be tired. My mom was locked in, although maybe around like half or a little over half the movie she fell asleep and then my dad woke up. So then it kinda felt like just me n my dad but as I occasionally looked over to him he was lowkey still in an out of sleep. I kept watching though because helloooo peak is on? I love the b&w color of the movie for myself, but I do hate that it turns everyone else off from watching the movie whenever you recommend it, maybe that’s what they were bored of? I love the beginning one shot. I like that they don’t concern us with names. I like that everyone gets a chance to talk enough. I like the pacing. I like the fast paced and witty dialogue. I felt just as entertained and encapsulated on this second watch as I did my first time watching. Some of the best performances in history are in here. This movie has some of my favorite shots in a movie as well. I like way you progressively see people change their minds. I LOVE Lee J. Cobbs performance & ending monologue. Never really noticed the score on first watch but it’s great on second watch. I love everything about it man.
