Ju-on: The Grudge

American Mary
Watched this years ago, back when I was in that phase of wanting to find the most disturbing movies ever made. Found American Mary in a lot of āmost disturbing movies icebergā videos. Most of the times, it was on the 2 or 3 tier in the icebergs so I remember really wanting to watch it. The problem is that the ppl who made those videos always said how disturbing it was gore-wise.. well I was disappointed and was instead left heavily disturbed by the rape scene. None of the body horror/gore was really all that. So I ended up not liking the movie, but I decided to give it another try. And now I like it way more. Mary is a very interesting character, her motives makes sense. One could see her start cutting people up after her assault and think āyeah, she lost it, she wants revengeā. And I guess itās kind of the case at first since she goes after her rapist and tortures him. But the more she gets into the body-modification business, the more you can see that she actually found something that heals her in a way? Definitely giving her that sense of having control again in something that is actually not malicious. She has a temper, sure? But the work she does is for herself AND for the people she works on. One thing that makes no sense to me is why she wanted to hurt that random girl in the clubās bathroom after seeing her giving a bj to that dude.. like, she doesnāt care about him at all, especially not like that and it was shown multiple times. Anyways, what really makes this movie for me is the message that it sends. You can change your body however you want, you can be whatever you want because you have control of you own body. The way Ruby explained it was beautiful and made so much sense. Which is a message that fits well to what happened to Mary. Lastly.. Mary really didnāt have to die. That was fucking stupid.

shouldāve read the synopsis iāve never been a fan of those rape revenge movies, i hate them. so since i didnāt read the synopsis, you can imagine how caught off guard i was (my fault). i knew it was a revenge movie but didnāt know of what (shouldāve guessed from the poster). anyways.. outside of the graphic SAs scenes, i really liked the first half of the movie. it portrayed the behavior of a victim of rape very differently than it is often showed in films from that time. sadly, to me, this was all destroyed once Thana started becoming this femme fatale archetype who dresses the way she does to attract men and get revenge on them. it was not needed, especially since the beginning of the movie clearly proved that you donāt need to be āsexyā for men to be attracted to a women and then assault her. the film wouldāve been more interesting if Thanaās personality that we first saw, stayed completely during the rest of the movie. but itās a movie from the 80s, so we canāt expect anything else.. oh, and of course Thana had to die. typical idk how many stars to rate this, bc i donāt think the movie is necessarily bad. it is definitely better than the other rape revenge movies i saw, but still not well executed.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
such a simple yet unique vampire film. the visual style is such a perfect choice for it. one of my favorite vampire movies for sure!

Nosferatu the Vampyre
why is Count Dracula so funny in this lmao no but in a serious note, I didnāt expect Lucy to be shown more as a heroine than a damsel in distress, I love her. glad I finally watched this classic

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning

Frankenstein
I did not like the way they chose to tell the story and not just talking about the narrator style choice. It could be my own preference because I have this issue with a lot of movies but it felt like the story was told too fast. The change in Viktor and the creatureās relationship should have been shown slower. I think they wanted to make the audience understand that Viktor was actually the monster so hard, that they decided to speed it all up and/or cut a lot of scenes. Thereās this problem with the creature and Elizabethās relationship as well. They interacted twice and Elizabeth (seemingly) fell in love or deeply cared about him. It felt a bit forced and seemed like they added a romance bc they thought it was needed for a gothic horror movie (it is) but they just didnāt know what to do with it. Iām not against that relationship, in fact I wished it was executed better because I, too, love gothic romance. That all felt superficial :/ Last thing, I still donāt like the creatureās design at all. Ever since the first look of him came out, I hated it and finally watching the movie didnāt change my mind. Of course it canāt be a replica of the original creature, it would be boring. But Nosferatu (2024) completely changed count orlokās design, and it worked. At least for me. Here, it just didnāt, the creatureās design looked too clean maybe. On the positive side, the movie looked beautiful and the actors did great, especially Oscar Isaac. Iām really glad with his performance. And in contrary to crimson peak, a movie I found visually beautiful but had issues with the story, I would definitely watch Frankenstein again, because despite itās flaws, I enjoyed it.

The Long Walk
this movie managed to make me cry about the death of characters that i didnāt care about or that didnāt even have any lines. the more and more people died, the more i felt hopeless and sad. the tension was rising and not necessarily visually, you could feel it even when the characters were being optimistic and smiling. thatās impressive to me

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
Iām so sad to say I am disappointed in this movie... Iāve always heard such good things about Twin Peaks in general, so I was very excited to finish the first 2 seasons of the show (which I liked a lot) to get into the film. Unfortunately, Fire Walk with Me disappointed me. I was expecting more answers and to know Laura Palmer much better, since all we know about her in the show is what the people who knew her had to tell us. However, the movie did not do that. It doesnāt tell us (the people who watched the show) anything that we didnāt already know. I also thought the story was told way too fast. When the movie ended, I felt like I watched a 40min episode instead of a 2h+ film. Fire Walk with Me didnāt give Lauraās story or her as a character any justice. I am still glad to have seen it. It still managed to show how tragic what Laura went through was, it is good addition to the show, and the acting, directing, the visuals ect was great as expected. I will probably watch it one more time, it might grow on me.

not sure how to rate this but i absolutely loved this movie. the realness, the stylistic choices, it is everything i like. maggie cheung is one of the most charismatic actresses iāve ever seen. however, this movie lost me in the end. the story warped up so quickly, maggie "disappearing" just like that made me wondered if i had skipped multiple scenes. i wished the movie was longer.

Final Destination Bloodlines
i didnāt expect it to be THIS good. in fact i didnāt think it would be good at all the premonition sequence has to be one of the best in the franchise. i was afraid they showed too much in the teasers and trailers but it wasnāt the case. maybe the first teaser shouldāve been shorter to be able to enjoy the actual scene more but it didnāt bother me that much. none of the deaths were predictable, at least not for me besides maybe one or two and this time i ACTUALLY cared about the characters. i didnāt care for any of the characters from the two previous movies. they were bland and felt like they were pretty much there just for us to see them die. but in bloodlines, all of the characters seems like actual people. who also have real reasons to not believe the main character and it was very refreshing. *now the actual spoiler* so happy, that we got to see tony todd one last time and also very happy that his character was finally explained. i always thought that he had been involved in a premonition when younger or that he had a premonition himself. the āhe is death or a accomplice of deathā or whatever theory, always seemed way less interesting and also goofy. i actually wouldnāt mind a prequel about iris and william, to see more of their journey on cheating death and figuring things out. but iām not sure if involving tony toddās character in other movies with a younger actor would be a good idea. maybe tonyās final appearance should also be williamās. r.i.p tony todd, truly a legend.

Cloverfield
never been this pissed off at a character in a long ass fucking time. thereās a huge fucking monster destroying your city and you want to go through hell and back to save a girl that could be dead (btw, realistically she shouldāve been), not even knowing if you could save her if she was alive, and at the same time risking your friends life? yes, the friends chose to follow him but still??? this movie had a huge potential, it looked good, the creature had a good design, but they chose to waste it all for a romance story that i donāt think anyone cares about. and it ended all with an annoying delusional dude and a irrelevant girl. hopefully lily survived cause none of his friends deserved to die bc of his stupid choices. anyway, this was so ridiculous that i was wondering throughout the whole movie if one of the genres was comedy.
