Stagecoach is action-packed, a classic western, and simply cool to watch. Ringo just has aura in this film. I saw the 1939 colorized version, and in my opinion, it looked very good. Overall, a cool western with John Wayne, lighthearted and easygoing, which I would rate 3.7/5.

Stagecoach

So many intriguing characters in a predicament that only can be seen in westerns, Stagecoachstands out as a western that is more devoted to character work than action, which makes it stand out, even among the likes of other major westerns.

When it comes to westerns, I have not been a fan. I love the general idea of a western, but haven't really found any film to be particularly memorable. Stagecoach is a western that I have been meaning to watch for a long time, and finally decided that it was time, since I really want to diversify what I watch in 2018. I need to start watching more westerns and Stagecoach seemed like a natural place to start. Surprisingly, it's actually quite a decent film. There were points in the middle that seemed to drag a little, but Ford's direction would always end up bringing me back in and sucking me back into the story. It's not the most memorable film out there, but it's certainly far from a bad film. This definitely was a great place to start for westerns and I hope to start appreciating westerns a little more this year.

Mad Max Fury Road in '39. God that John Wayne entrance was so cool, just from the reload and the dolly zoom. I get why this is very influential but sometimes this can feel a little dated, but the part that aged very poorly is the depiction of race, gender but Ford did well on sex workers. Yes, it has the classic trope of a woman not knowing her self worth until a man comes and tell/show her but Ford did it well in '39. A bit racist towards the Native Americans. This film can feel sluggish just in the first 60 minutes but the cast of characters are entertaining and funny so it kind of just removes the whole "slow" pacing. This was just good.

“What this country needs is a businessman for president!” Did John Ford know? Who can say for sure…what I can say for sure is that STAGECOACH was very entertaining. Not a masterpiece, but undeniably influential on not just the western genre, but film as a medium. It was cool to see just how many conventions were established here that would go onto be emblematic of what the western is. Wayne is the big name here, but for me Mitchell’s Dr. Boone stole the show. That’s just the sort of character I find myself drawn to in stories. A good friend (https://boxd.it/XT76V) of mine called the 1930s Fury Road and I cannot see it any other way now. Just more proof of how the various pieces of this live on in cinema, even if the whole isn’t on par with some of Ford’s later an greater works.

Film School Drop Outs Weekly Challenge (https://letterboxd.com/goghaliens/list/film-school-drop-outs-weekly-challenge-2019) Week 8: Genre - Western - The Dying Western (1930s) Western films are really not my thing, so I was the least excited for this week. Chose the highest rated movie, only to now find out that there was a James stewart-led one right there :/// which apparently had singing in it!!! Im sure I would've enjoyed that more. The rating doesn't mean that it's necessarily bad on a filmmaking level, it was just an underwhelming experience. Some aspects have aged badly, and the knowledge of Wayne's interview just makes the whole thing worse. Positive: have now seen one more important genre movie and will get the references made to it in other films, so yay. Also, can see its influence on The Hateful Eight.
