Straw Dogs

Straw Dogs

Film #8 of June 2017 Scavenger Hunt Task #9: A Film That Criterion Recently Announced They Will Be Releasing Straw Dogs truly is deserving of its re-release on the Criterion Collection. Not realizing that this film wasn't released in the 80's, I was expecting a lot of violence, but nothing came close to what this film featured. Finding out that this film was released in 1971 was a shock, as this film had the violence that contemporary films have. I couldn't imagine how audiences must have felt about this film, with it being 1971 and not many films portraying as realistic violence as was featured in this. Hoffman seems out of place, which is exactly what this film needed, as the character is out of place in the world they've created, making this film work on all levels. This is one of those films that glues you to your seat from the opening and never lets go. Straw Dogs was revolutionary for its time and still manages to work, even with todays violent standards.

Straw Dogs

I find more depth, and more to admire with every viewing of this. Wish Hoffman would’ve tapped into this a bit more, but his casting in this is perfect. Peckinpah of course films the action with the excitement you’d expect, but he also manages to fuse that wiry tension into the quieter moments as well.

Straw Dogs

a discomforting exploration of masculinity, violence, and sexual aggression. the central rape sequence is the film's most problematic element for me. despite amy's initial resistance, the scene is disturbingly depicted as a quasi-consensual encounter, with her apparent sexual enjoyment undermining the gravity of sexual assault and lacking any clear narrative justification. if the rape scene were excised, the film might've more coherently focus on david's transformation from passive intellectual to violent defender of his domestic space. whether this approach is artistically valid remains a point of significant debate. i wouldn't want to be stuck thinking about people the way peckinpah seemed to, but then his movies wouldn't be the same without that component either.
