The Man Who Fell to Earth

"Our opinions won't make it to Mars" A friend once told me "rich straight white people came up with the concept of aliens because they didn't have anything real to fear" Here, a 2+ hour epic (no doubt about that one, no matter how alternately meandering or fast-paced it can be seen as) about the one real fear everyone has about that concept deep down: that if anything not from here came down here it'd just be a matter of when, not if, they become as broken in some capacity as the rest of us. Rich but spending it in all the wrong places; lovely but unable to be + feel loved; chasing a dream that can't be fulfilled and/or a past that can't be returned to; drunk (with power or with alcohol); in denial. "Look up here, man, I'm in danger; I've got nothing left to lose"

The Man Who Fell to Earth

this movie didn’t pack a single punch when so many times it could have given the amazing story, stellar cinematography, set designs, and editing. it could’ve been weird and provocative in the best way possible but i left feeling kinda underwhelmed. overall still loved the concept/plot

The Man Who Fell to Earth

It cannot be stated enough how much of a prodigy David Bowie is, and The Man Who Fell to Earth more than proves it. He brings so much otherworldly gravitas to the character of Thomas Jerome Newton, an estranged wanderer whose eccentric behavior entrances Mary-Lou (Candy Clark) and makes him susceptible to manipulation by other men hellbent on exploiting his fortune. Besides Bowie’s performance, the film is also a visual feast and absolutely gorgeous to look at. The interior of Thomas’ home is so ahead of its time that it’s hard not to mistake it for a modern home. Also has one of the wildest sex scenes ever put to film. Overall a surrealist experience and ostensibly one of, if not the greatest sci-fi film, ever made.
