Diary entries forJohnny Mnemonic
Johnny Mnemonic
Robert Longo (https://boxd.it/wij) • 1995 • Sci-Fi, Action Recently I decided to go back and play througha game calledCyberpunk 2077 — set in a dystopian future controlled by massive corporations and all out gang warfare. I’ve also recently decided to sit down and watch Robert Longo’sdirectorial outing (his only one, for that matter), Johnny Mnemonic. I was pretty surprised to see how much the game seemed to take from the film — our protagonist is dealing with potential death after inserting some type of data into his head, an assassin using some type of laser wire to cut people apart, just the factKeanu Reeves is involved in both projects AND he is also called Johnny in the game. After some very quick research I found out that Johnny Mnemonic was written byWilliam Gibson, the grandfather of the cyberpunk genre — it all started to make sense now. In regards to the film itself, Johnny Mnemonic is a generally muddled film with some pretty amazing visuals. Shot by François Protat, the film has quite a uniquely 90’s techno futurism aesthetic which I believe is what carries the movie regardless if the film itself has a hard time creating an identity that is unique on its own and not portrayed better in other movies. Keanu Reevesis charismatic enough and his little strange mannerisms (like his voice inflection) is a great addition to the film (he is very serious about room service). All in all, I enjoyed this well enough. I skimmed a bit through the black and white version, which is the version Robert Longosays is much closer to what he envisioned, and I don’t really understand the point of it? I don’t really think it lends itself to that style at all, especially since it wasn’t initially shot for black and white. Just seems weird.
