To Live and Die in L.A.

Ok maybe if I'd seen this before Manhunter I would've had a better notion about what the William Petersen deal was all about. (I'll give his Will Graham characterization another go some time, promise!) But I wasn't here initially for him or anyone else, just Dafoe! And Dafoe is what I got, hell yeah. So it starts out treading pretty standard "in too deep" cat-and-mouse criminal intrigue but it looks just so good doing it and then quickly starts delving into much more interesting territory and getting side-swiped by Friedkin levels of amped-up resolve. Having also seen the deleted alternate ending which reeked of insane buddy cop movie smarminess, I was pleasantly surprised by the dark route they stuck to and which the story was very much owed, right down to its rotten center.

To Live and Die in L.A.

harsh film. The synth heavy score rocks, Dafoe is amazing in this, as are the two leads. Love seeing Irving here (John Turturro). That car chase scene solidified this as a 5-star movie

To Live and Die in L.A.

“The stars are God’s eyes…” TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A.is one of the most sleazy, homoerotic, and cynical crime films I’ve had the pleasure of watching. It’s an all time favorite and watching it with friends who hadn’t seen it before really highlighted for me how special this was and what you don’t see in Hollywood productions these days (dynamic lighting and cinematography, sensuality/sexuality, stylish directing, etc.). The film’s energy is frenetic and infectious without a slow dull moment in sight. L.A.‘s ending is still one of the more cruel one’s I’ve experienced…wouldn’t change a goddamn thing though. Impactful, bold, aspirational. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

To Live and Die in L.A.

a fun neo noir. the soundtrack is oh-so 80’s it hurts, and i do mean that in the best way possible (i just saved the title track). went in for the homoerotic implications, and ended up enjoying it on it’s own merits.

I wished William Petersen did more roles instead of him being stuck in the CSI Factory.
