Irreversible

going to try to forget i watched this honestly. horrific and not in a way i can wholly appreciate, though the structure was really unique, the camera work was stellar, and the core message was there. leaving it unrated. i don’t want to say it was a bad movie, but i couldn’t find any enjoyment in it whatsoever after seeing alex’s assault. a brutal and indescribably bleak movie.

Finally gave this a watch. I'm certain I've felt more disturbed by art before, but never so simultaneously disoriented. I gave this an average rating not because it's an average film, but to play it safe because frankly I can't comprehend what I just witnessed, even after years of being warned in advance what I'd be getting myself into. Let alone determine whether I consider it bad, good, a masterpiece, or something to completely avoid Noe's future filmography over.

Irreversible

I'd say Gaspar Noe is a fucking genius. How could he have thought of making a movie like this? (The reverse plot) It was confusing at first, but I managed to connect the dots. As for the story of the movie, I found it incredibly cruel. I was angry and too stunned to speak. It was very disturbing, especially the tunnel scene.

Irreversible

No words can describe the rage I felt, in the beginning, middle and end of this film because I knew what was coming. This is someone’s story, whether the film is under the genre of fiction or not is irrelevant. This was so brilliantly shot and acted. I stared in literal horror, barely blinking for about 12 minutes straight. It appears from his films that Noe always wants his viewers to feel something; well I feel (and have been feeling) that all rapists should be hung, drawn and quartered. They should all be killed.

Irreversible

89/100 I am sorry for doubting you Mr. Noé after watching the first twenty minutes of this film because I thought the camerawork was horrible, the dialogue was inexplicable, the music was dictating my breath and it seemed purposely experimental but how wrong I was. One thing you must notice is that the camerawork gets more and more stable as the film goes on, into the past that is. This just represents life getting better and better the further back you go. Irreversible shows the events in a reverse order in hope to explain that a film can show you how life was before and how what you see on screen gets better and better but in reality, once the damage is done, there is no going back. Everything is shattered from that point on. This choice is what makes the film as good as it is. In terms of dialogue, there isn’t much substance when you get into the good times, it’s just friends and a couple hanging out, talking shit not knowing what could happen. In a way, it serves its purpose because it clearly tells us that we are usually sitting idle, partying, talking about nothing and the next day, something happens and life changes, you don’t have the luxury to talk about nothing anymore. I really liked Albert Dupontel as Pierre, he was the one sane and innocent individual who was hurt beyond belief when Monica goes through the rape and that’s why we see him lashing out at the beginning, still bugs me that they didn’t show him killing the rapist but maybe that’s another moment of reality that they probably don’t escape from the Rectum and everything is over. Anyways, no point overthinking, it’s a fantastic film which I severely underestimated to be an overly explicit experimental film, while it is all that by definition, it invokes a much greater emotion and appreciation for life. A masterpiece.
