The Book of Clarence
AMC Screen Unseen: #1 - The Book of Clarence If I recall correctly, the trailers for this made it seem like a comedy. It has some comedic parts but it really is much more of a drama. Quite a lot of sad or upsetting moments, especially towards the end. LaKeith Stanfield was awesome as usual and I thought the rest of the cast was also pretty good. Some very pretty shots too. 7/10
The Book of Clarence
Tonally a bit of a mess, unsure of what it wants to be in many ways. But it’s a fun time, and the cast is game. LaKeith Stanfield is excellent as always, and the supporting cast really make the most of their time on screen. I feel a little puzzled about the aim of this, it simultaneously feels like it’s trying to make a larger point about faith, Christianity, race, charity, but it’s all a bit over the place. When it leans into its comedic efforts, it really succeeds. Somewhat surprised that this didn’t get a bigger release, very curious to see the discussion around it when it inevitably hits streaming and becomes more fertile ground for conversation. 2024 Ranked (https://boxd.it/rJ4dW)
