Diary entries forThe Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera
Maybe it was the Victorian London setting, or the "time travel" aspect to the movie, but for most of the movie I couldn't shake the fact that it felt like a reboot episode of Doctor Who. And that is not a bad thing! I can see why the movie bombed and got a negative reception when it first came out, but it has that late 80s early 90s charm that movies had at that time that you just don't get from movie now a days. It defiantly leans into being more of a gory version of phantom that hasn't been tried before and the effects are defiantly good and fun to watch. Robert Englund does a phenomenal job as Erik and eats up every scene that he is in. The "present day" sequences that bookend the movie aren't the most necessary but they are fun for what they are given that the formula is a product of its time.

The Phantom of the Opera
An absolutely unforgettable rendition of the famous story of the Phantom, the ’25 version of The Phantom of the Opera is my favorite version that I’ve seen yet (other than the stage version, of course). The Kino Lorber restoration on the film is nothing less than stunning, with a quality that left me breathless. It may not be the scariest film out there, but for the time, this must have been a true fright - it’s watching films like this that make me want to go back in time and see how people reacted to films. I absolutely love this story, and this film certainly has won me over.
The Phantom of the Opera
Not quite what I was expecting based on the posted. This VHS box stuck in my head for years. For some reason I always thought it was more of a western take on the Phantom, and I’d still like to see that. The film looks beautiful, and is really pretty damn well made. Definitely think I’ll be revisiting this at some point.
