“𝘈 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩! 𝘚𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘵𝘩, 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘥𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨..” Stilts itself from staying stagnant as a play, but really incredible moments where it cuts to explosions, unsettling us through the torrential rain and slippage in mud, all done in good blocking and camera movement thanks to Losey’s strong control. There seems to be an overcast of baptism throughout, but one cannot save oneself from war. War is a sin, and one that carries itself out and spreads to all those involved. Power shifts. Power plays you. And no one is safe. Sadistic anti-war flick, and from skimming through all these reviews, a forgotten WWI film.
