Phantasm

The remastered version looks great, some of the moments are still iconic, and that whole funeral parlor is gorgeous. The first time you see the all-white look of it and the camera shot of a character isolated amidst it is likely the most engaging thing I've seen out of a 70s horror film

Phantasm

Having watched the fourth installation in the series before this film, I was completely confused as to what this series was. After watching Phantasm, I still have no clue what to expect from this series. Maybe I’m just not in the right mindset to watch a more obscure science-fiction/horror film, but Phantasm didn’t click with me. It was entertaining, but the story and characters didn’t seem to click with me. I’ll have to revisit this at another time, as I have heard amazing things about it, and maybe now that I’ve watched it, it may grow on me even more.

Phantasm

There were a handful of distinct horror films that rolled into theaters in 1979 and yet none of them were as surreal and bizarre as Phantasm. Lost in the dreamy imagery is a faint and cryptic plot with so-so characters - however, Phantasm doesn't care too much about that. With time it paints a surreal and exotic dreamlike story. Its beginning is also quite secretive - intentionally I believe - and it is hard to suss out what is actually happening. Somehow, and strangely, this low-budget is rather creative and entertaining to watch and fall into. Like a kid falling deeper and deeper into a surreal dream I was baffled, enthralled, and rather shaken.

“𝘕𝘰𝘸 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳: 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘢𝘪𝘮 𝘢 𝘨𝘶𝘯 𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘮. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘪𝘮.” Casually napping with a shotgun and a boxed up Mexican jumping bean mutilated index finger is wild after a man is beyblade to death by Go Go Yubari's meteor hammer. How do you save your parents when they’re dead? A lot of fun in an eighties kind of way. Good jumps. Surprisingly more sci-fi than I expected, but blends nightmares so real in the realities of two grieving brothers. There are moments when I forget which is dream and which is reality, and here, it admits that the two are inseparable. It takes the horror of the grief to sever the two.

Hooptober XI: Part 2 // Rewatch. It doesn't get much better. I love the dreamlike atmosphere. The relationship between Jody and Mike feels so real and it's wonderful. The music reminds me of some of the best soundtracks from classic Italian horror films. My favorite part is either the iconic sphere kill or the impromptu jam session with Reggie and Jody. 10/10
