Maybe it's because I was late to the party with this, and I had seen movies similar to this that were most likely directly inspired by this movie, but this was just ok. Given its reputation, I really wanted to like it, and I kept waiting for the moment where it would capture me, but by the end I couldn't shake off the feeling that it was just fine. Tony Todd was great, and it had some cool settings, but that was just about it.

Firstly, Virginia Madsen is fantastic as Helen in this. Secondly, this is pretty good. It draws heavy inspiration from Nightmare on Elm Street but that’s not a bad thing, and I prefer Candyman overall. The film is well paced, has good villain and is thoroughly entertaining.

Duas amigas estão escrevendo uma tese sobre o assunto Lendas Urbanas e o principal foco de pesquisa delas é um mito de um conjunto habitacional na periferia chamado Candyman. Candyman é, antes de tudo, um filme de terror que não foca nas ações de seu antagonista para contar sua história, mas como as consequências de pessoas que circulam esse meio, principalmente o da mídia hegemônica, de não levar a sério ou com pouca seriedade os dramas e vivências de pessoas negras que são empurradas para a periferia onde a violência do desacato social os cerca. Candyman vai utilizar da ótica hétero branca cis para mostrar como várias vidas negras sendo perdidas e ignoradas por aqueles que não entendem 1% da vivência dessas pessoas. Atrelado a uma direção que instiga, um roteiro que cria uma série de eventos e consequências que não te fazem perder o Interesse, o filme é muito hábil em te situar naquele contexto onde o vilão não é a assombração, mas o fato de que sua história, como a de outros de seus iguais, são levados como mentira ou apenas, olha só, lendas urbanas. No mais Candyman é um ótimo filme de terror que não apenas contente em contar uma história de terror que instiga, te faz ver que o principal monstro de uma sociedade segregada são as condições desumanas que grupos marginalizados são deixados e largados para sobreviver.

A very interesting entry for "horror in broad daylight" cinema. Also very VERY interesting seeing this through the prism of the current moment and that time-capsule effect for contrasting the race & class view from 1992 to now. Coming out of this unsettled, surprised, impressed, embarrassed... a good range :S -- and finally, very very VERY interested to see this tale in the hands of Black filmmakers.

I'm just happy that as an African-American man, that 'Candyman' has once again been given the nod to enter people's consciousness. Rest in peace, Tony Todd.

“Bee my victim.” Tony Todd makes any movie better, his voice is smoother than an aged Macallan scotch. One of the better slashers I’ve seen so far. Trevor is such a little bitch, fuck you Trevor.

First time rewatch since Tony Todd's passing, and it was so surreal of a watch.
