The Last of the Mohicans
My dad has watched this movie multiple times and had no idea what to expect. Safe to say, this is the greatest movie I've seen in my life and now it's just gonna be stuck in my head.
The Last of the Mohicans
C'était cool 👍
The Last of the Mohicans
❝Great Spirit, Maker of All Life. A warrior goes to you swift and straight as an arrow shot into the sun. Welcome him and let him take his place at the council fire of my people. He is Uncas, my son. Tell them to be patient and ask death for speed; for they are all there but one - I, Chingachgook - Last of the Mohicans.❞ 𐄁─────⋆⁺‧₊☽ ◯ ☾₊‧⁺⋆─────𐄁 The Last of the Mohicans is an interesting and mixed bag; while it's visually stunning, the plot was unfortunately not as stirring until the last act. Daniel Day-Lewis did a fantastic job as Hawkeye, and as the main antagonist Wes Studi was truly formidable as Magua, but the rest of the cast paled in comparison. I wasn't the biggest fan of the soundtrack, either, though I liked the costumes and makeup. So, overall, while I'm glad I watched this at least once, I don't known if I'll be revisiting it in the future. → film-related note: why did all the native american actors and daniel day-lewis have much nicer hair than me, i'm actually so jealous 😭

ACTIONx52(023) (https://letterboxd.com/allbeef/list/actionx52023/) #41 of 52 | Watch an action film with a lead actor/actress who’s not usually known for starring in action films. I think this is my second DDL and fourth Mann film. I’ve always loved Mann’s commitment to realism, and it’s very much present here. The settings and set pieces are amazing, it really makes me want to just drop everything and go hike across North Carolina right now. They just don’t make movies like this anymore. DDL does a decent job, although I can already tell it’s far from his best performance. The music is pretty good. The wide-shot action sequences are incredible, but the close-up sequences are stiff as hell. Overall, I had a good-not-great kind of time with this one. Still excited to see more of both gentlemen in the future.
The Last of the Mohicans
It’s hard to root against Magua consider ingl he’s an indigenous man murdering British colonizers.
The Last of the Mohicans
This was pretty good. I wasn’t as into it as I expected I would be, but there is a lot of great in this movie. The love story felt a bit forced, and the ending feels very rushed to me. But the set pieces, the score, and the narrative are extremely compelling.
The Last of the Mohicans
The Last of the Mohicans has been a long-standing blind spot in my Michael Mann watchlist, and—sacrilege or not—I didn’t love it. Of the Mann films I’ve seen, this landed as his weakest. On a purely technical level, there’s plenty to admire. Shot in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Dante Spinottieffectively captures the untamed American wilderness with his use of long lenses and careful framing; the on-location work gives the film a real sense of scale and air. Wes Studi’s Magua is the standout by a mile—a tragic figure twisted into becoming what he despises. Honestly, I wish the film focused entirely on him. Everything else never really clicked with me. Daniel Day-Lewis is a phenomenal actor, that much is known, but Mann’s writing doesn’t give him much beyond this flinty stoicism, and his sudden, unprovoked romance with Madeleine Stowe’s Cora. Hawkeye’s adoptive family mostly fades into the background when they should anchor the entire story. Steven Waddington’s Major Duncan seems set up for interesting depth, but winds up getting sidelined past the halfway point. Pacing is another issue. The film rushes past beats it never earned—Hawkeye’s long-winded, heart wrenching promise to find Cora (“no matter how long, no matter how far”) cuts straight to him finding her in the next scene. It plays like an hour went missing, and that missing time might’ve given the side characters an actual arc. The music doesn’t help either; the score is so forward it steamrolls any tension, especially in the finale. It’s not to say it’s bad—I like listening to it in an isolated environment—but as it stands I found that it overpowered the tension the film attempts to build. I’ve always felt Mann’s sensibilities shine brightest in his modern, interior dramas—men defined by code, unable to find peace due to their un-shaking conviction to their duty. Here, the period epic pulls him outward, and it ends up feeling less like a Mann film and more like a glossy studio adventure movie with flashes of his touch. Magua is the one character who carries that interior weight, which is why I kept wishing the story were told from his side. Great images, one phenomenal performance, and not much else that moved me. All in all, underwhelming. • Watched in 2025 — Ranked (https://boxd.it/C7Jq6)
