Fitzcarraldo

This movie is easily one of the best I've ever seen. It's crazy how far a man will go to achieve his dreams. It's not just Fitzcarraldo, but also Herzog and the making of the film. He went trough hell to create this masterpiece

Fitzcarraldo

A grand achievement in filmmaking, albeit quite a troubled one as well. Director Werner Herzog is an irresponsible, at times dangerously so, filmmaker quite unlike any other. The trouble production for Fitzcarraldo is infamous for the harsh conditions the talent and crew were put through (one of the “harsh conditions” being that of Klaus Kinski, the notoriously volatile German actor). The film follows out titular character as he tries to bring opera to the jungle, specifically the famous Enrico Caruso, by building an opera house within it. To make his dream a reality he needs capital — to achieve this, he sets his sights on the trees that secrete natural rubber in an effort to amass such a large fortune. This is no easy feat to accomplish as he is forced to, somehow, pull his giant river boat over across a mountain to get to the other side of the river. It’s pretty obvious, based on the synopsis of the story, this is not something that a normal person does — this is a film all about the destructive power of obsession, which does get the better of him in the end. One thing that is noticeable is just how much of a mystiqueWerner Herzoggives to its setting, or in this case the Peruvian forest. It’s a familiar feeling that was very much present inAguirre, the Wrath of God, his well-known film from 1972 that had an incredibly trouble production as well. Funny, that.
