Dawn of the Dead

This was an unexpected treat, I couldn't quite get a bead on where it was heading at most every step. And then the weeks start falling away and I become more and more appreciative of where Romero is taking us. Killer mood! Don't know that I want to finish out another series after all that Halloween business, but......

Dawn of the Dead

Dawn of the Dead

My favorite parts of this are when they just start throwing hands with the zombies, hilarious. I wish they would’ve shot this in b&w, because the grey paint looks blue on film with whatever color grading they did in post. Kinda funny tho, like “Dawn of the Blue Man Group”. Still, this holds up very well and is one of my favorites. George A. Romero, you sir are the king of zombie films. P.S. slow zombies are the only correct form, if they’re sprinting then they’re technically not zombies.

Dawn of the Dead

What a surprise Dawn of the Dead was. Having seen Zack Snyder's rendition of the film, I was ecstatic to see what George Romero had done originally. Finding the extended version of the film, I decided that was the one to watch, as it really was the only full version that I could find at the time. After sitting for two and a half hours, I left this movie wondering exactly what is so regarded about it. Looking at reviews, there are many people who absolutely love this film, a love that I have for the remake of the film, but not the original. From the beginning of the film, I felt it start to drag along, only being ten minutes into it. As the film progressed, I just felt it getting less and less interesting and really started to drag along. While the zombie kills were interesting, it wasn't something that managed to grab ahold of my attention and keep it the entire time. By the end of the film, I was more happy to have been done watching it so I could get onto the next thing on my list (as I watched this film during an all-night marathon of films). Dawn of the Dead is a good film, but it doesn't compare at all to Night of the Living Dead and really isn't as good as I hoped it was going to be. Maybe I have to let it sit and watch the cut down version of it, rather than the extended, since maybe it will drag a little less and keep my attention. Until then, I'm just disappointed that this film wasn't as good as people were raving about.

Dawn of the Dead

"When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth" First time viewing the theatrical cut of "Dawn of The Dead". Wow. This movie is just fantastic! While "Night of The Living Dead" is a much more claustrophobic horror film, this one is more comedic and fun - leaning more into an action movie feel. While the first film had political themes that were unintentional, the themes in this one are entirely intentional. Racism of police rescue squads, the media sending people to rescue stations that are no longer operable and more. On top of that, there's amazing performances from Ken Foree and Scott Reiniger. Peter is an amazing character! While I like the other characters, those two had a friendship that makes the film fun. There's also a fun appearance from makeup artist Tom Savini. Speaking of makeup, the effects in this are incredible and bloody. They're much better than the first film. Also, on the topic of improvements - the setting. While I loved the farmhouse of the original, the mall is such a cool original concept. They really go all out with it and it adds to the fun of the film I'd love to view the extended cut and European cuts respectively. For now though, the theatrical cut is amazing! The 4K HDR theatrical cut is available on Youtube (for free) so give it a watch!

Dawn of the Dead

"When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth." This didn't even feel like a zombie movie for most of it lol. I couldn't tell if it was satire or not with the whole mall thing. So much different then what I was expecting. I did enjoy this more than the night of the living dead though. I really like the concept with the mall, I've always been a firm believer that you could survive in a mall/supermarket for days on end. The zombies definitely look way better in this. The gore/blood is pretty crazy and actually shocking. Not a lot of horror aspects however. The characters I actually liked this time, Peter and Roger carried hard though. I still am gonna give this 3.5/5 because of that whole beginning part that was weird. Besides that a pretty solid zombie flick. Day Of The Dead next.

Dawn of the Dead

somehow saw the 2004 remake before this one. that one’s not bad, but this one is obviously head and shoulders above it. one plus: goblin!!! this one’s a lot more like. fun. than night of the living dead (which is incredibly bleak mostly in part because of its ending, but the general tone is pretty drab) the commentary on American consumerism is very welcome here. someone who is a lot smarter than me could probably write an in depth analysis of that stuff like how people get focused on having material goods over the things that actually matter. i like movies set in a confined location and the mall is a great location for that kind of story. i like how this really takes its time to let us get to know our characters. some people may call this “slow” which it very well could be but it makes it easier for me to root for these guys when you get to see them just hanging out and stuff. and a lot of the more comedic moments give you a moment to breathe until the horror parts come around again. damn good zombie flick.

Dawn of the Dead

The best. One of the things that I feel like the remake really misses is the sense of fun and joy that the characters here exhibit and enjoy. Even when surrounded by the living dead, there can still be moments of fun and enjoyment.
