Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Hellraiser is a hard film to follow up on. Hellbound: Hellraiser II does a great job at creating the same atmosphere and the same style as the first film, as well as the same aesthetic, but what it makes up for in style it loses in originality, as it really did feel like it was a rehash of the first film. But, that doesn't mean that this is a bad film, as it is just as entertaining as the first film. It's just as wild, which is a good thing, since that's what makes these films to much fun to watch. They're different and horrifying, and this is a worthy sequel to such an iconic first film.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II

not as good as the original but there is a lot to like here. the production design is pretty cool with the matte painting backgrounds and the practical effects are nastyyyy at times, so extra points given for that. wish there were more of the cenobites though

Hooptober X (https://boxd.it/oR2z6) #17 of 32 • 1 film based on a Clive Barker story (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Films_based_on_works_by_Clive_Barker) Well, unfortunately, the only thing this one has going for it is a strong beginning and some amazing practical makeup effects.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Not quite as effective as the first, and the latter parts of the film have a tendency to drag. But man, some of the stuff in this is just straight gnarly. Maybe the first time I watched it I didn’t know what to expect and left disappointed, but this time, I got it. I definitely see why some cite this as their favorite/the best in the franchise. Not quite there for me, but it’s fantastic. HellRanker (https://boxd.it/dOpPc)

Hellbound: Hellraiser II

#4 Hallowed Be Thy Name: Hooptober 2015 (http://boxd.it/saYC) Hellbound is a surprising spectacle in contrast to its predecessor. Partly, the sequel thrives in generating a hellish type of atmosphere, good performances, and as always a fantastic amount of gorgeous gore. And, importantly, it has fun with it.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II

"Strange, surreal, nightmarish?", responds a skinless from head-to-toe Julia, after she asks her new friend what she looks like. It is true: her appearance is all those things. But her remark, however, is rather ironic considering that these three words are generally what differ Hellraiser from other 80s horror flicks. And it's obvious that the sequel has taken note. Aiming to expand on the surreal visions depicted in the original, Hellbound: Hellraiser II specifically ups the ante with its portrayed bleak universe, devoting a good amount of time in showcasing the act. By the time the hellish labyrinth kicks in, it's somewhat of a reliever. What comes before is reminiscent of the original, in fact, the story's basis is basically repeated, which does make you wonder if this was an entirely necessary film or not. It is slightly better, in my opinion, thanks to more screen time from Kirsty, and an all around better cast. The gore is bloody and close at home to the original, however, there are hardly no new surprises. Hellraiser II is basically an honorable repeat that's surprisingly lathered in greater wonder than before. 2.7/5

Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Liked that it builds on the original, instead of shifting focus to a new protagonist or just rehashing the previous film. More fucked up and gruesome than the first. Not as entertaining though; definitely felt the runtime on this one. They spend a little too long worldbuilding / inside the hellscape. The making of pinhead scene was pretty good. As was the showdown between Dr. channard & cenobites, and the former’s final form.
