Prince of Darkness

đŸ˜‘đŸ€š don't talk to me until I've had my liquid Satan đŸ„€ Creep-o central here in the Quantum Halls of the Anti-God. Haven't checked in on the science & religion scene in a minute—and it's quite a muddle here—but dread mood achieved all the same. That synth driving us forward, keeping the pressure on... pulse of a future lying in wait.

Prince of Darkness

HOOPTOBER 16 A FILM WITH DREAMS AS PART OF THE PLOT _____ note to self: a green liquid never means anything good in a horror movie. case in point, it’s Satan in this instance. while not as good as its spiritual predecessor and definitely takes a while to get going, this one’s got some pretty cool ideas. i liked the “dream” sequences that felt kind of analog horror before analog horror was a thing. Spooky! and that last scare did get me. i will admit.

Prince of Darkness

Not a whole lot happens but it’s still pretty fun, wish Donald Pleasance had a bit more to do though.  Those dream signal shots were super creepy.  7/10

Prince of Darkness

Interesting and fun slow burn Carpenter. Tremendous cast. Great score.

Prince of Darkness

Semi-atmospheric tale surrounded by the pulse of Carpenter's signature finger-tapping rhythms; each forge of synth choir encapsulating the overall somber mood of the film and enriching the intact darkness. This is one slow and total Carpenter creation—perhaps it isn't his best, but, there's a lot to awe at, despite the clear amount of excitement. Prince of Darkness starts with a long ass opening credits montage—one that's hard to get into, and even though it sets the tone of the film quite well, it somewhat throws too much at the screen. Like any third act in a film from the director, the finale here is real good stuff, especially when highlighting the nasty, melting face of one baddie. Still, I was surprised the film didn't have more amazing special effects or disgusting sights—for a while it feels like a slasher, disposing characters one by one in a way that's almost ominous. There's even one death scene with a sawed off bicycle done by the legendary Alice Cooper—perhaps I had the most fun then. For all the sights and sounds of evil that are depicted, Prince of Darkness offers the goods but doesn't really soar any higher than just that. Nonetheless, the mood is grand and the direction is sweeter—Carpenter's flair is eternally present. 3.6/5

Prince of Darkness

In fact
you will not be saved! Easily Carpenter’s most atmospheric film, and perhaps most ambitious that I’ve seen. From the editing to the score to the actual story itself, it grips you, demanding your attention and doesn’t relent. Perfect for an October watch. Eager to revisit this again in the future.

Prince of Darkness

Prince of Darkness is, without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite horror films — not only from John Carpenter, but in the genre as a whole. What makes it so unforgettable in my mind is just how Carpenter manages to blur the lines between science and religion, delving into the idea of an ancient, incomprehensible evil lurking just beyond our understanding. He doesn’t present this evil as an abstract concept or idea, but as a physical, malevolent force, capable of corrupting humanity. The film works well not only as a piece of cosmic horror but also as a profound exploration on the power of faith — it’s rather beautiful, despite the horrific imagery Carpenter revels in. This scares the hell out of me. ⏔ SPOOKTOBER 2024 (https://boxd.it/zfHxS)
