Resurrection

Visually this is absolutely stunning, genuinely some of the best sets you’ll ever see. The colours are also beautiful and vibrant, and the opening scene is pure perfection. It had me so excited for the rest of the film, and it had serious hype behind it during the festival, but I’d be lying if I said I enjoyed this. Its problem, for me at least, is it’s quite boring and feels so disconnected from one section to the next next. I really wanted to love this but I just couldn’t, towards the end I was just looking forward to it being over which is really disappointing. Wish the story was engaging, but sadly for me it wasn’t.

Resurrection

i was pleasantly surprised and fell in love with the first 15 mins of this movie, the first 15 mins of this movie has no audio dialogue, like a silent film. and the set design and camera movement were absolutely mind blowing!! so, i was quite disappointed with how the movie progressed after that first 15 mins bec it was a completely different vibe and all i wanted was to go back to that part of the world. i also felt that the story dragged a bit, i think that first dream sequence adds nothing to the story. but, i do still think bi gan is a really talented director and i'm looking forward to watch more of his creation!

Resurrection

Resurrection is a remarkably textured viewing experience. In a world where dreams lead to mortality, we are exposed to a quartet of lives lived, each exploring different worlds where various forms of creativity are highlighted. The opening of the film is an absolutely jaw-dropping experience; we get to see an homage to how gripping silent films can be, told through such a unique lens. The sets for this piece in particular are stunning. From the opening card, telling us of the world we are about to be thrust into, I knew that this viewing was going to be something special, and the following vignettes lived up to the anticipation that I had when I first went into it. As we enter into the first story, I found myself losing my footing a bit, since I wans’t entirely sure what was going on. But, once I got a grasp on what was going on, I was able to sit back and enjoy what Bi Gan had created here. As we went story to story, I found myself being more and more spellbound by Gan’s visual storytelling. The first vignette had some stunning camerawork, but the highlight of the film is the final vignette, where we get a truly stunning single take shot. The third segment felt like it was the emotional centerpiece of the stories, offering a layered examination of fatherhood and childhood. It all came together in an ending that felt tender, even with as bizarre as it ended up being. I’m honestly astounded by the sheer amount of creativity that went into crafting a film like this, and I’m so grateful that I had the chance to experience it on the big screen. This film feels transcendent at times, but also is highly reflective of the human experience. It’s a wacky watch, but one that I was completely on board with, which made for a very fun and unique viewing experience. I can confidently say that I haven’t seen a film like Resurrection before, which is so refreshing, since I got to get a glimpse into the mind of someone crafting brilliance.

Resurrection

90/100 2025 ranked - boxd.it/Fn1G4 (https://boxd.it/Fn1G4) That last hour or from whenever the New Year’s arc begins is one of the most breathtaking pieces of cinema I will ever see. I was in awe, I was in trance fuelled by M83 and love and red light cinematography. That sequence alone makes this journey worth it. I am out of words. The first person shot invoking this dreamy feeling of Silent Hill and Cyberpunk is something you have to see to understand, I don’t know how to describe it but it made me feel melancholic that I might never get to experience something like this ever again. The club sequence with Butterfly by Smile.Dk ringing in the background and Teresa Li singing in pain had me replaying on repeat while watching the movie, I simply couldn’t get myself to move forward for a while. Oh how I wish I could just project the entire sequence to play on repeat while I dream away into the night! You know when they say there’s nothing new these days, cinema is at a recycling phase and mind you I don’t mind the same style and stories being repeated if they are well told, you show them this. You show them that there’s so much left to tell, so much left to our imagination, so many emotions left to feel that had never felt before. You show them this and you understand the kind of person you are showing this to. Dare I say this is a litmus test of persistence because the hour before the NYE sequence is testing. It does flow in waves, one moment you think you’re understanding it all and the next you feel stuck, begging to gain the ability to even crawl out of this storytelling you do not connect with, storytelling that you do not want to be a part of. But alas it’s so rewarding, so entrapping and simply masterful. It’s Lynchesque to a point where it’s afraid to commit itself entirely until it takes a turn and elevates you into a world you’d hate to be a part of but also cannot keep your eyes off. How does one think of such a thing, how does one even begin to make such a thing, genius exists and we see it unravel right in-front of our eyes. If this didn’t make you feel something special, something missing from your life, you my friend are as good as dead. You don’t deserve to dream because it’s only dreams where we can let ourselves go, let ourselves be the happiest we can ever be. This is an ode to cinema and imagination with the aid of fantastic sound design and stunning visuals. It is mandatory to watch these with AirPods or any noise cancelling buds on because you have to be lost, you have to immerse yourself and only then will you come out of this wishing you never left. My last three films have been the holy trinity of Asian films - Japanese, Korean and now Chinese. Not intentional at all and not equal in terms of the level of filmmaking either but each appealing to the strengths of their ambition and culture. So much left to see and so little time left to see it but we will be marching on, one by one day after day for a feeling like this. Generational. Also, I loved that recreation of the Sméagol LOTR 3 opening.

Resurrection

I am in awe. Absolute awe. I don't think I have ever seen anything like this, this was like 5 different films in one, all connected. The cinematography is otherworldly, seriously this film is incredibly beautiful to look at. The first 20 minutes or so are some of the most creative sequences of film I have ever watched, the visuals mixed with an incredible dreamy and somewhat ethereal soundtrack are just sooooo good. I could literally just watch those first 20 minutes over and over and over and over again for the rest of my life. The rest of the film is amazing as well, a masterpiece, but that first part really stuck with me. What a film, and what an experience. I bow to thee, Bi Gan. ChiAollenge 2026 (https://boxd.it/R7raO)

Resurrection

Bi Gan is a director I’ve (unfortunately) barely explored beyond his 2022 short, A Short Story. Resurrection has been on my list since the second Janus Films announced its release, and—judging by my admittedly arbitrary score—it didn’t just meet my expectations. It blew past them. Resurrection is a meditative exploration of cinema’s power as an art form, and the profound, stubborn force of human imagination. Set in a world where immortality has been achieved through the sacrifice of that imagination, we follow what the film calls a “Deliriant”—someone who chooses to dream and accept a shortened life—as the light of his life begins to fizzle out. Miss Shu (Shu Qi) is tasked with finding these individuals, offering them an escape from their pained existence through death. And as this Deliriant starts to die, the film takes us—along with Miss Shu—through a cascade of dreams, realities, and experiences. It might sound a bit obtuse on paper, but the framework is just scaffolding for the emotional ride Bi Gan builds within it. From silent-era German Expressionism to millennial vampire romances, Resurrection is less interested in an overarching story than it is in sensation—humanity, religion, love, hate, and the bitterness of living—filtered through a constantly shifting cinematic language. There were stretches that left me speechless, not just because of the grand creative swings the film takes, but because of how often it all manages to come together. The images feel otherworldly and achingly human at once. I honestly didn’t know films could look like this. A grand, raw, emotional epic that doesn’t ask to be intellectualized so much as felt, Resurrection is a landmark for Bi Gan’s young career and, frankly, a milestone for the medium itself. A genuine miracle. A modern masterpiece. Dream on. Dream big. ᐅ 2025 Releases — Ranked (https://boxd.it/Ds7XW) ᐅ Mise en Scène: Perfect Films (https://boxd.it/bATqq)
