O carro, como signo de um imaginário específico, quase sempre está relacionado a essa idealização de virilidade masculinista, um artifício de poder e conquista materializado na conquista do automóvel; aquele que o tem, nesse sentido, seria considerado como “mais homem” em relação aos demais. É nesse espectro das pressões masculinas do ensino médio que o jovem Arnie Cunningham encontra um Plymouth Fury abandonado e o reconstrói. A partir daí, surge a dualidade que está no cerne do comentário do cineasta John Carpenter em Christine: afinal, seria uma dita “força sobrenatural” capaz de alterar o comportamento do adolescente excluído ou sua mera fantasia de poder que o converte em uma pessoa errática e agressiva? Pois a marcante cena de reconstrução da Christine, embalada por um jazz suave e decupada de maneira detalhista em todo o processo de “revelação” da criatura dá conta de exorcizar as nocividades do olhar patriarcal através do cinema de gênero e com muito mais profundidade que inúmeras tentativas posteriores. O que, para alguns, é um mero conto aparentemente esdrúxulo de um carro assassino, para Carpenter é muito mais, seja como perspectiva estrutural e, principalmente, como o mais estarrecedor exercício de terror na Hollywood dos anos 80, balanceando a sugestividade do sobrenatural com a frontalidade característica do cinema de horror.

Turns out, I’ve only seen bits and pieces of Christine, and boy am I glad that I was able to sit down and give this a thorough watch. This was one of my first Stephen King novels that I read nearly 15 years ago, which made the story feel a bit more fresh since it’s been so long since I last encountered the story. The visuals are stellar, and even with the weaker script, it still works to create a spellbinding film. I forget that Carpenter directed this, but after seeing it for the first time, it’s clear that it fits right in with the rest of his filmography. There’s some truly stunning practical effects here that even rival The Thing with how impressive they are. s

“Keep-a knocking but you can’t come in” - Bad to the bone great song choice to open. - Beautiful looking car, they really don’t make cars like they used to. - Uhhh why did he grab him there ?!?! - Effects are actually real good. - Great songs all round. - Arnie’s crazy eyes !
