The Vanishing

A methodical build-up, slowly weaving the elements of obsession together. Darkness in broad daylight. Compared to the Hollywood remake (near as I can make out, I aint gonna watch that one), I assume the metaphysical space here wholly supercedes the true crime space there and we're all richer for it. Can only appreciate our modern depths plumbed via the stark influence of films like this one.

The Vanishing

I watched the remake of this before knowing it was a remake. Imagine my surprise when finally checking this out, and seeing what a deeply unsettling, masterful film this. The performance by Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu is what makes the film. One of those perfectly calculated, and executed, performances that completely digs its claws into you.

The Vanishing

“𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘐 𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦. 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺. 𝘚𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦. I guess that’s what life without closure is. You really do have to ride with the tides until you’re brought to little bits, etched details that speak to a larger truth you must craft yourself. The construction of the film itself is Jacob’s Ladder straddled by bones, but not between heaven and earth, but hell straight into the psychosis of a serial killer. And you carry yourself with the wind, the sweet fragrant mystery of it, until the very end that is both chilling and disturbing. But you can’t help but look away. Lynch says, from Lynch on Lynch (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/168797201-lynch-on-lynch?ref=nav_sb_ss_2_14), “..𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘮 𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘮. And it’s a disaster that unfolds in real time, so carefully done, that you too fall victim in complicity. “𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘰. 𝘈 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘩 𝘨𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴.”
