Y el final, that's what I call modern feminism.

This wasn't the best of the south-korean director, but this put a spell on me.

The Handmaiden is this year's most anticipated film for me. Having never seen anything from Park Chan-wook, I thought that it would be a good idea having some knowledge about the films that he has directed before watching his new film. I thought long and hard about my approach, since he has mainly done Korean films, but did have the surprise English language film Stoker. I decided that it would be best if I started with his English language film, just to get a sense of his style before really getting into what he's known for. Now, I haven't seen many Korean films, really with one Korean language film, and a handful of others in English. There is a certain style that I've seen that is common throughout all of the films, and Stoker has those very elements. There are some camera angles and shots that I've noticed are really similar, which is really interesting. There are directors who continue to use similar shots (the most notable being Tarantino's "trunk shot"), but it's really interesting to see that a whole section of cinema has the same style of shooting. It's amazing, and it really shines throughout this film. Wasikowska seems like she's destined to do dramatic roles. I've seen her in several films, and I think that she is one of the better talents today, as well as one of the best young actors. Her potential shines throughout Stoker, especially toward the second half of the film. Distant and melancholic, Wasikowska seems to play India with ease, gracefully going through the transitions of the character. India is one of the most memorable characters I've seen in a while, and I'm glad that Wasikowska was the one to play her. Her subtle approach, with the fantastic script, really makes India seem fantastical, yet extremely realistic. Kidman is one of my favorite actresses, and I was ecstatic to see her in this. While she was on the screen, she seemed to be truly living. Evelyn Stoker is a character that would normally be extremely hard to play, but I think that Kidman was perfect for the role. With children herself, it was easier for her to get into the character, and it made her character feel more real. I'm really glad that Park Chan-wook wanted to have Kidman play Evelyn, since she really could show off how fantastic of an actress she is. Goode was mesmerizing as well, seeming to engulf almost every scene that he was in. The dynamics between him and Wasikowska were electric, with some of the best scenes in the film being between both of them. They're a pair that I really would like to see together in a different film. Stoker is a film that I've been waiting a while to see. I remember downloading it several years ago, and wanting to watch it, but never really had the incentive to start watching it. I'm really glad that The Handmaiden is coming out, since if it wasn't, I most likely would have waited much longer before finally deciding to watch this. While it's not horror like some say it is, it's still one of the most horrifying films that I've ever seen. Wasikowska's haunting performance drives this film, with the supporting cast pushing it along. Park Chan-wook is a director that I've really wanted to see, and I'm really glad that I decided to start with Stoker. Now, it's finally time to watch Oldboy.

❝Just as the skirt needs the wind to billow, I'm not formed by things that are of myself alone. I wear my father's belt tied around my mother's blouse, and shoes which are from my uncle. This is me. Just as a flower does not choose its color, we are not responsible for what we have come to be.❞ 𐄁──── 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚.────𐄁 I understand the vision behind Stoker, but for me it unfortunately falls a bit short. The performances from the cast, especially that of Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, were brilliant, with the latter standing out to me a lot due to his almost robot-like acting. I really liked the camerawork; there were a lot of close-ups and geometric shapes within compositions that along with the very fluid transitions gave the film an unsettling atmosphere that matched the main plot points well. The colour grading/palette was also pretty dark without becoming bleak, which again accentuated the psychological tension felt by India. The main issues for me were with the actual story and pacing; the first forty minutes or so were incredibly dull filler that began building up to the better second half quite late, and Charlie's motivations were revealed very near the end, which meant that the majority of the film was spent wondering why certain things were happening. I also just wasn't a fan of the incest vibes I was getting from Charlie, so a lot of his scenes with India were very uncomfortable to watch. So, on the whole, while I really like Park Chan-wook's other works, Stoker isn't for me.

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this movie. I know I *liked* it, but I feel like I need to see it at least once more before I know for sure how I feel. Very interesting.

i can assure you that India Stoker didn't do anything wrong at all.
