Man I just could NOT bring myself to care — I love when they said “it’s hamming time” and hammed it up for the whole movie.  Very much feels like something that should’ve been a short film and then extended to 2 hours with loads of filler.  5.5/10

existe uma área da emoção humana que só a arte pode alcançar. eu sabia que seria uma história emocionante, por conhecer o livro, mas nada me preparou para a profundidade dessas emoções. sobre luto e perda, mas ainda mais sobre o poder que a arte tem de lhe proporcionar uma extensão para essa dor, um abrigo para deixar ela se lapidar até tomar forma e poder ser admirada. esse filme tem uma beleza que se enxerga muito mais com a alma, mas não apenas com ela. até a pessoa mais insensível não poderia deixar de ressaltar a direção tão bem feita, inteligente e cheia de alma nos detalhes. e acima de tudo, as performances… existe o Oscar para premiar esse atores, eu sei, mas não sei, posso estar muito enebriada pela emoção, na minha cabeça eles merecem mais do que um troféu por essa entrega. Paul e Jessie estão inacreditáveis, mas não tem como eu não dar o meu louvor maior ao Jacopi Jupe, essa criança fez surgir uma mãe em mim, e me fez sofrer como uma que perdeu o filho. incrível, eu espero que ele seja sempre lembrado dessa performance fenomenal dele. ah sei lá, quero achar mais palavras para dar nome a cada lágrima que derramei (foram muitas), mas como eu citei no início: existe uma área da emoção humana que só a arte pode alcançar. e eu acho que a única coisa que realmente quero fazer é criar, é fazer arte sobre o mundo, seus amores e suas dores assim como Shakespeare um dia fez e que Chloé Zao faz agora com Hamnet. que obra… acho que me marcou pra sempre!

The greatest play ever written, just as a way to say goodbye. One of the most beautiful tragic films you’ll find. With a crescendo that will leave you on the floor. Jesse Buckley and Paul Mescal are astounding. I now, having seen the film, fully believe that Mescal not receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor is one of the great oversights in the history of the award. Buckley getting that Oscar though. Everything you’ve read about the performances in this movie are true. Chloe Zhao also directs the hell out of this. Especially in the films finale. The shot composition is breathtaking.  There is admittedly some real attempts to tear the heartstrings directly out of the body, for better or worse. It all mostly lands. But I think the pacing is actually very well done considering what the film is. It’s hard to stay interesting when telling this type of story, but I think Zhao and company to a mostly solid job of it. But I will say, the payoff in the finale is worth every second of this film. To see the world mourn in front of a grieved mother is something so breathtaking. Knowing that a loved one lost will be remembered the world over forever, is so beautiful.
