so visceral that it can’t help but be seen as anti war. by the time the first black hawk goes down you forget what they’re even in there for, and it’s all just so ridiculous and senseless. that being said, it’s very pro soldier, and by extension it ends up being pro war—who wouldn’t want to be part of that type of community and brotherhood? the coloring on this doesn’t help that assessment either, every somali is depicted as pitch black, they don’t even speak the right language, and it’s not even filmed in somalia. a lot of this i’m tempted to blame on bruckheimer, especially considering ridley’s own kingdom of heaven later. a lot of the original, incredibly anti-war script was cut and it leaves us with this. technically sound, even great, with terrible material.
