Next of Kin

A very slow burn that comes together in the last half hour as (an at-times surreal) Aussie horror experience. With dying people around her in more ways than one, Jacki Kerin does well in her only starring role of her career as Linda, heiress of a retirement community she increasingly wants no part of, only partially because of the strange shit that keeps happening around her keeping her on edge I didn't Intend on having a weird-shit film day today when earlier in the week I preordered tickets for Malignant, but then reviews on that started coming in, and then I saw this was leaving Shudder soon, so I guess I'm just gonna have a weird-shit film day!

Next of Kin

Next of Kin was highly recommended to me, and with it being on Shudder, I thought I'd give it a try. I did watch this film only a few days ago, and in all honesty, I cannot recall one detail from the film. I actively sat and watched the film, and still cannot say one thing that occurred. It may be because I've watched other films in the time, but Next of Kin didn't leave the same impression on me that it did on others. I will have to revisit this soon, since it has some very good reviews, and hopefully will be able to properly review it next time.

Next of Kin

A Bay of Blood: A Ranking of Slashers (1974 - 1990) (http://boxd.it/IoH8) Beginning brooding and slow, this Australian Horror soon erupts into a terrific amalgamation of slasher aftermath and tension, built pretty miraculously by its tame pace. It really is unexpected how quick Next of Kin turns into what would occupy a slasher's third act, and it's damn entertaining to watch unravel. With a terrific score and atmosphere, this might just go down as one of Australia's best horror films, and also one of the smartest slashers of the 1980s. There's a house, a mystery, and a few dead bodies, all of which are detailed in a fitting amount of gradual tension and scares. Maybe it is a little too slow at points, but by the time that third act rolls around it's very much worth the wait. 3.8/5
