Peter Strickland combines the aural fixation he showcased in Berberian Sound Studio with the seductive-eventually-turning-to-grotesque food closeups of A Banquet to almost-astonishing effect, in the process pulling off a great horror-comedy/comedy-horror depicting three people who can't stand each other (and are Terrible at hiding it) still being able to make something impressive despite it, documented by a male bystander who's trying to distract himself from his gut eating itself Maybe the most honest line of dialogue I've heard all year in a film about the state of modern America/humanity, and definitely one I can't help thinking about since hearing it that sums up even just this week/month (to say nothing of the prior year/decade) of news: "We all hate each other, even though we all need each other". Take a minute to laugh after the hour you'll spend feeling sad, or an hour to laugh and then a minute spent being sad; both reactions are correct

Performance art meets the sonic qualities involved with culinary actions, with a reverse case of gas, to create a fantastical and thought-provoking world that only Peter Strickland could come up with. It marches to its own beat, just as the rest of Strickland’s filmography does, which can be quite jarring for those just getting into his work. But for those who do enjoy the bizarre worlds he creates, this is one delectable feast. Easily, this is Strickland’s least accessible film to date, but it’s also one of his most creative. I’ve been a fan of his since The Dukes of Burgundy, and I will continue to seek out his work as it comes out, since Strickland truly creates some innovative and though-provoking films, all done with a very European influence, which is my exact cup of tea. A fun and wild film, but one that only a few might actually want to put time and effort into finishing.
