Well worth the wait
Mad God
Feverish, dislocating, bottomless. Astounding, astounding, astounding spectacle, feeding from and into deliciously dark tendrils of animation history. Animated short films dating back decades have often brought form to our bleakest realities and potentials, but so rare and special to see that contorting in on itself at feature-length with all the same resolve and idiosyncrasy. There's no distillation here, no softening, no balancing. Just sustained marvel, conspicuous in its own creation, unearthing our worst things and holding them up to sear under the enduring introspection of art and craft.

Grotesco, horripilante e lindo, bem produzido e feito com paixão. Uma obra totalmente alucinada que parece vir de um pesadelo. Não possui falas, nem precisa. Você não entende nada, além do que é mostrado para você: um mundo coberto em caos, dores, terror e injustiça. Que filme diferente.

Un film très dérangeant et palpitant en stop-motion. Il est produit par nulle autre que Phil Tippett, l’homme derrière les effets spéciaux en stop-motion de nombreux films à succès dont Star Wars, Robocop et Starship Troopers. Lors de son travail sur Jurassic Parc, Tippett a été ébahi par l’animation numérique et a plus ou moins laissé tomber le stop-motion, jusqu’à reprendre son travail sur Mad God, laissé en plan pendant plus de 20 ans. Mad God est viscéral, c’est probablement la représentation la plus proche que j’ai vue d’un cauchemar : tout est lugubre, douloureux, chaotique et pervers dans un monde gouverné par un Dieu rendu fou. La scène d’ouverture est une adaptation de l’histoire de la tour de Babel dans la Bible, mettant en place l’idée d’un Dieu vengeur et tortionnaire. Le film est une représentation très profonde de la douleur : tout semble douloureux, chaque être, chaque scène semble peiner à ne serait-ce qu’exister et prend place dans un monde gouverné par la violence insensée. Le film est difficile à suivre car les événements sautent, les personnages suivis changent, mais un certain fil narratif plus ou moins linéaire a lieu, comme dans un rêve. Le film n’a aucun dialogue, représentant l’impossibilité d’exprimer la douleur par le langage lorsqu’elle nous touche : tout ce qu’il nous reste est le hurlement et le cauchemar, la résignation à se fondre dans une souffrance qui ne signifie rien et n’a aucune logique.

What a visual treat and allegorical mind bender. While seemingly filled to the brim with otherworldly places and creatures, I was still left wanting more. I could sit here and watch The Assassin travel through this God-forsaken (literally) hellscape all day every day. What it lacks in explanatory storytelling, it makes up for in eye-catching and stunning sights you will only ever find in this movie, and for me that is what makes this a good film.

The glorification of world building. As soon as you think you understand the mappings of the world, it grows larger and larger, and with time and restatement in the creation of this film, you lose yourself in the horrors and wonders of Tippett’s mind. Strange. Wonderful. Doesn’t really add up to much in its heavy metaphors and imagery, but what a world to get lost in. And I wouldn’t mind getting lost in it again.
