Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Film #14 of June 2017 Scavenger Hunt Task #28: Two Science Fiction Films With Similar Themes So You Can Compare And Contrast Them The underlying question for the theme I focused on was what will happen when extraterrestrials come to Earth? As seen in District 9, the aliens called this planet home, comparing the aliens to the ever-real immigration debate currently going on. In Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the approach is completely different. Instead of the aliens physically coming to Earth, they do the stereotypical "alien" things, like abductions. Spielberg, just coming off of his success in Jaws managed to create another blockbuster that's just as good as his previous feature, while completely changing things up for the plot. Spielberg's early style really starts to show here, seeming to be really similar to his approach in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The first half of the film was the better half, with the second half seeming to lose itself in plot and action. The first half of the film was immaculate, with ever scene being completely engaging. While the second half did slow down a little, it still managed to be an amazing alien film that really paved the road for more science fiction films. The aliens don't do as much on Earth here, compared to what they did in District 9, but they still are up to the same type of things; wanting to examine humanity and investigate what it is to be human.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Seeing that this was going to be released in my theater for the 40th anniversary release, I knew that I had to go see it on the big screen. The 4k restoration of the film was absolutely beautiful, being able to be shown in our XD theaters (which are absolutely huge), while the film still looked as gorgeous as ever. I had trouble watching this film the first time, as I was tending to get distracted and lost interest in the middle of the film, but watching this in theaters was a completely different experience. After finally paying attention to everything in the film, I'm still just blown away by how stunning this film is, especially this being Spielberg's next film after Jaws. Close Encounters of the Third Kind captures that pure terror of aliens, but also puts in the interest that we have with them. It's an amazing film that had a beautiful restoration that I am beyond happy that I actually got to see.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Aliens in this movie aren’t here to kill us, they just wanna vibe and play music 😭 Starts slow, gets weird, and then the climax is actually beautiful. A man really said “screw my family, I must go see the lights” and honestly, I don’t get it. The final act is pure awe: lights, sounds, and peak Spielberg magic. The movie does get a lil boring at times though. Overall, it’s straight up cosmic madness.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

56/100 I’m sorry but no. What even is this? Dude sees UFOs, gets obsessed and finds another woman who feels the same and they meet up at the end and watch the cinematic large UFO play some music. This film kinda reminded me of this 2012 Akshay Kumar film called Joker, just the color schematics and the sounds. That unfortunately is one of the worst things I can say about a film. Only thing I can actually appreciate about this is the first 1/2 an hour which was mysterious and more serious in government involvement, conspiracy and religious movement but ultimately, it got worse and worse and more boring as it went on. I had to watch this in two sittings. Is Steven Spielberg overrated?
