Diabolique

A French horror which isn’t scary at all, Les Diaboliques is more of a noir thriller than a horror. The story is interesting but drags at times, the ending is what makes this such a classic. It’s worth a watch, but there are better horrors out there.

Diabolique

Film School Drop Outs Weekly Challenge (https://letterboxd.com/goghaliens/list/film-school-drop-outs-weekly-challenge-2019) Week 22: Actor - Simone Signoret I was sold on and loved the starting dynamic between the mistress and the wife as each others almost, frequent ride-or-die, with the former (Simone Signoret's Nicole) playing the protective/helpful half, of the friendship duo, to Christina—who was stuck in a situation with little to no power and control—by teaming up against the abusive, manipulative, greedy, shitty husband. Women supporting women, or so it seemed; the characterisation did seem a bit ahead of it's time. Henri-Georges Clouzot soon turned the concept on its head. I suspected/believed Michel to not be dead, but didn't put two and two together until it was happening—he was rising from the tub—that it dawned on me she must have been a part of this; disappointing thought turned into reality. But it made complete sense and was earned—hinted at intelligently & perfectly for the keen audience to pick up—that I can't and couldn't fault it, no matter how betrayed I felt, momentarily on the time of reveal, to have that thing be taken away from me. It's no longer worth noting my surprise that the supposed power duo, didn't consider how traumatizing it'd be for the kids, especially mistress who thew the keys, seemingly engaging in a brutal act. Which upon consideration, it was, but there was a target, one that was obviously different: using C's immense (remarked) compassion and general sympathy for kids against her. Diabolique is a film that initially masquerades as an early addition to the 'She did that!' cinematic universe; but remains engrossing, memorable, thrilling (in the last momenta when C walks down the hall to see who's there, it actually had my heart racing a bit) and worthy of the hype even after the facade is up. Also, suffice to say, the cast did a great, convincing job.
