Stephen King's It is regarded as the film that gave a whole generation the fear of clowns. This is the film that kids would watch when they were younger, hidden away in the middle of the night so their parents wouldn't know they were watching it. Many of my friends had this experience with this film, but I sadly didn't get to have that childhood memory. Finally I decided to take the time out to watch the film that many love, since it truly scared them. It isn't scary, by any standard. This film certainly is scary for young kids, but probably isn't going to scare anyone over the age of 10. The film has the 90's aesthetic, which works at times, but makes the film feel very dated. Some of the effects felt a little dated too, especially some of the computer effects that were revolutionary at the time, but just haven't aged well. Now, this is a horror film, that's what it is intended to be. But the film really isn't scary. Pennywise was made up to have a huge part in the film, but I was surprised to see the very little screen time that he actually had. Curry is praised for his performance, but I was expecting him to have a larger part in the film, rather than only have select scenes to show up in. His makeup is the only frightening aspect of the film, other than some of the acting from the kids as adults. This particularly shines in the second half, which happens to be the weaker half of the series. The first half of the film was much more entertaining and just was better done, with the second half really starting to slow down and lose the traction the first had gained. It is one of those childhood horror movies that scared people as kids, and still scare them today. Having not seen this as a kid, I don't have that same connection to terror, but even if I did, I still wouldn't find this film as terrifying as people make it out to be. It's entertaining, but isn't scary in the least. This is one of the better Stephen King adaptation, but is far from the best Stephen King adaptation (which still goes to The Shining, despite its differences from the source material). It is an entertaining film that surprisingly went by fast, but didn't live up to the hype that it has gained.

as someone who does notenjoy silent films, i wasn’t sure what to expect from this, but clara bow’s magnetic performance made this movie a surprisingly engaging experience. she radiates charm and charisma in every scene, perfectly embodying the concept of “it”—that indefinable allure. she really is timeless. the story itself is a fairly straightforward romantic comedy, and some moments feel a bit stretched without dialogue to propel them forward, but bow’s vibrant presence and expressive acting make up for the film’s quieter moments.
