Miami Vice
A dinâmica da vida que se constrói a partir do trabalho e como a cada novo dia cada conexão pode ser destruída. Mann constroe sua versão de Miami Vice através de uma investigação que se sucede de tragédias, conspiração e um senso de justiça que se eleva ao limite. É um filme barulhento e toda a ação se desenrola a noite. Música, corpos que se entrelaçam, corpos institucionalmente marginalizados que são captados com vida, tesão e muita paixão. O personagem do Jaime Fox é duas vezes mais cauteloso. Ele não só é um homem de cor como sua parceira faz parte da operação e quando o Mann coloca essa provação ele é um prelúdio da tragédia, mas me choca que a verdadeira tragédia esteja com o personagem de Colin Farrell, ele cria essa história de romance que está fadada ao fracasso desde sempre. Existe uma barreira que separa ambos, tanto metaforicamente quanto fisicamente futuramente. É meio irônico que o diretor alimente uma promessa de final feliz, mas que quando chega o final mesmo... É um adeus sem palavras, sem juras, a missão foi concluída, o traficante foi detido e o trabalho continua.

A transição da película para o digital no cinema hollywoodiano tem em Michael Mann o seu percursor mais audacioso, especialmente em como se apropria do dispositivo para estabelecer esse sentimento de desolação constante que reafirma as tormentas internas de seus personagens, aprisionados pelo ofício e incapazes de encontrar liberdade da condição sistemática que estão inseridos. Cabe a eles o sonho de uma fuga, assim como Sonny (Colin Farrell, certamente o seu melhor papel/personagem) ao encarar o oceano e contemplar o horizonte como um escape. A graça aqui é quando Isabella (Gong Li) surge em frente a esse horizonte minutos mais tarde (http://img.allscreencaps.com/uploads_m/1135/m/Miami.Vice.2006_@Ti_05722_@R8777.jpg), no exato ponto da narrativa em que a atração do casal começa a surgir. Aquela esperança se materializou em um rosto. E Sonny, pela primeira vez, considera existir uma libertação daquela realidade. É o início do romance e o prenúncio da tragédia confirmada pela sequência final, onde o recomeço se reafirma como improvável e resta para a câmera encontrar os rostos inconsoláveis de Farrell e Li em cena (https://youtu.be/NMF6pRtvT4k?si=zcmuYCgvkeCtO32k&t=108). Dos maiores contos de amor desse século.

Mann is the man. HOW DOES HE DO IT BRO?? and on this rewatch, it gets fucking better, nothing like it, just pure style over substance. The second best looking Mann film (Collateral is number 1) Mann just levels the digital filmmaking in this one. The saving Trudy sequence and Farrell's puppy eyes is the highlight of the movie.

65/100 Michael Mann either makes the greatest films ever or average films like this. There’s no in between. This felt bleak from the start. Usually good films get me into it within the first 10 minutes but I just couldn’t focus in this. This is also shot with some 80s camera because along with the dark visual tone that makes it more displeasing, it doesn’t look crisp. Perhaps that was intentional but I didn’t like it and I absolutely love 80s films. It’s a good film, gets lost in the first half but the second half picks up well. Despite all that, one thing is certain - a banger of a soundtrack. Mann’s films will always prompt me to Shazam and add some scores and songs to my library. His choice of music is impeccable.

Reading a few reviews and it seems that a lot are saying this movie is mainly for the vibes and not the story, in which case, sure? I don’t really like movies that are all style no substance unless it’s a horror movie and this is going on that list. It wasn’t COMPLETELY void of story but there wasn’t enough to keep me interested. The cast was cool I suppose, although Foxx was super underutilized. Colin Farrell can really rock any look and nail it, cannot prove me otherwise. If I were in it for the vibes and style, then yeah it would’ve been fun because it has a lot of great shots and the music is pretty good, but since I wasn’t it’s gonna be a meh from me. 6/10

Pretty cool that Mann was able to create a slick neon soaked sunlight noir with the original show, and when asked to bring it to the big screen decades later he goes with the handheld digital look he’d recently used so masterfully in COLLATERAL (https://boxd.it/28F0). Despite the low tech feel, Mann is every bit as successful at creating an entrancing stylish spectacle. It’s perhaps overly convoluted, but by the time the Nonpoint cover of “In the Air Tonight” begins, you’re not likely to care. For whatever the faults of Mann as an auteur, the one thing he can do consistently is shoot an incredible action sequence. In a landscape of uninspired overly CGI filled action, MIAMI VICE stands out and continues to age marvelously well. Michael Mann Ranked (https://boxd.it/oUjp4)
