The Pale Blue Eye

Within 24 hours within the first week of the new year, I already saw some of the more compelling thought-process scenes in recent memory. In M3GAN we had an artificial intelligence point out that if you make something shoddily with little care as to considering consequences, how can you be more mad at it than yourself when those consequences arise? And now here in The Pale Blue Eye, we have an investigator decry a military academy where murders occur as enabling the murderer's rise, and immediately comparing it to the horrors religion can bring and how it's a reflection on deities (if one can exist And allow these horrors, is it not effectively endorsing them, even if looking the other way as they occur?) What differs between the films is with M3GAN, the scene is late and gives us something extra to chew on on top of all the many reasons to think about and love the film for beforehand. With the Pale Blue Eye this scene is sandwiched into the middle of what's never as bold as it, though the second half it's part of does a better job of trying than the first half. And it's that second half that salvages the film for me, instead of making this just another Raven's Hollow (another, albeit more-disappointing, atmospheric recent film with a fictional version of West Point Poe that drops hints at what's to come of his work) Speaking of that second half: Gillian Anderson gets a great, almost film-stealing, scene or two in it. It made me wish we got to spend more time with her character (and the diminishing sanity she was clinging to) in this world. Speaking of people we didn't get enough of in this film: Charlotte Gainsbourg. what the fuck!

The Pale Blue Eye

The Pale Blue Eye is a solid detective story that dives into some wild waters, but is grounded by a great performance from Bale. There’s a lot going on within the film, which leads to a runtime that can feel a bit bloated. But, there’s some really interesting things going on with the plot, which makes the runtime go by a bit quicker than it normally would have for a story like this. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen from director Scott Cooper, and this is no different. It’s got his general aesthetic, which suited this story well. With a bit of trimming, this film really could have been a slick detective film, but I’m still glad that, despite it’s runtime, it still ended up being a pretty entertaining watch.

The Pale Blue Eye

❝You of all people know that the people we lost... are always with us... Man will do most anything to cheat death, won't he?❞ • ───── ✬✥✬ ───── • I was surprised to see so many negative reviews for The Pale Blue Eye considering the stacked cast and interesting trailer, so I went into it with low expectations; thankfully the 2 hour experience was very entertaining. I haven't read the book, so I don't know if this is a faithful adaptation, but I thought the plot was great, if a little predictable towards the end. It would've been nice to see more interactions between Edgar and the other cadets, to establish his character's 'weirdness' a bit better, as well as more with Lea to explain why he gelled so well with her and deepen their relationship. In regards to Augustus, I think fleshing out his bond with Mattie would also have made her death more impactful; perhaps seeing them lean on each other after his wife/her mother's death leading up to the incident would make Augustus' actions even more justified. Christian Bale always delivers, and his role as grizzly and jaded detective Augustus Landor was no exception. Harry Melling, though, was a dark horse who stole the show; his performance as Edgar Allen Poe was outstanding and entirely convincing. The rest of the cast also did good jobs, and I wish we could've seen more of Gillian Anderson. The costuming was fantastic, and paired with the great architecture immersed me in the time period of 1830. I think the locations were perfectly chosen for each scene too. The cinematography was beautiful: the use of natural lighting and dark and drab colour palette created an ominous atmosphere which absolutely added to the twisty plot. I also loved that candles/old-fashioned lamps were the primary source of light; although they were historically accurate, they also contrasted with the cold hues of the snowy environments, as well as casting shadows which added to the creepiness of certain scenes. Altogether this is an overlooked and well-acted Netflix film with sombre themes and grisly encounters.

The Pale Blue Eye

Christian Baleand Harry Mellingare quite good as detective Augustus Landor and poet Edgar Allen Poe, respectively. Unfortunately, it’s in service to a terribly dull script and ludicrous plot elements. I have never seen a Scott Hooperfilm before The Pale Blue Eyeand I don’t really plan on going out of my way to watch any future ones. Also way too long.

The Pale Blue Eye

I don't usually watch these kinds of movies, but I stumbled upon this while on Netflix and thought it'd be a good watch. Beautiful film.
