Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Acting was phenomenal, runtime was a little long but it actually worked. PSH & Ethan Hawke = a very watchable film. I could swear my heart rate was all over the gaff in the final 20 mins. I could feel the energy, pressure, confusion, fear. Well made for what it’s worth. PSH come back to us, please.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
❝May you be in heaven half an hour, before the devil knows you're dead.❞ ❝The world is an evil place. Some of us make money off that evil while it destroys others.❞ ۫ ׅ ⊹₊˚‧ ︵‿ ₊ ୨ ᰔ ୧ ₊ ‿︵ ‧˚₊⊹ ׅ ۫ Featuring some stellar acting from its lead actors, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead is a well-executed crime thriller that slowly devolves into chaos. The non-linear storytelling was a great choice, since it meant certain plot developments were revealed slowly and built anticipation as the characters kept digging their graves, and tension was built with every wrong move. Philip Seymour Hoffman absolutely gave the stand-out performance here, though Ethan Hawke was close behind, but the cast overall were excellent in their respective roles. On the whole, although I'm not sure if I'd watch it again (since I now know the twists and turns in the story), I really liked this film, and I think it's worth giving a go, especially if you're a fan of Hoffman or Hawke.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Brilliantly directed, and with fabulous performances all around. I miss Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
This has so much going for it. The performances specifically are all knocked out of the ballpark. Hawke, Hoffman, Tomei, and especially Albert Finney are superb. I was floored with Finney’s performance here. PSH is his usual magnetic self, drawing you into the film with subtle brilliance and then exploding on screen like dynamite. And Ethan Hawke’s tragic vulnerability is magnificent. Lumet is obviously a genius and one of the great filmmakers of cinema’s history. The issues I have with the movie revolve around pacing mostly, and the structure the film is set in. I think this type of narrative structure works for the most part in other films, but for some reason here I was taken out of the story instead of invested into it. Also the score and the transitions didn’t sit well with me. But overall; I found this to be a very good entry into the filmography of some true cinema icons.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
the music pissed me off
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Just watch the last 20 minutes and this was still awful and boring. Why in the first place you rob your parents? Birth Year Challenge aint going well (https://boxd.it/RJR8q)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Talk about a fucked up family. Sheesh. Rip PSH… a true professional who made movies better. Triple BONK for Marisa Tomei. BONK. BONK. BONK. I didn’t love the timeline structure; kinda hard to get into. Plot was good though and the cast was great. A touch long for me, but interesting story made this a good watch. 7.2
