Diary entries forVampyr
Vampyr
Some of the best visuals in all of film, Vampyr tells the story of an old Vampire running riot on a family home. The story is strangely paced, and it’s easy to miss lots of the symbolism which is going on, but where this film thrives is the attempt to make a true masterpiece. The icon stills and frames from this make it beautiful within itself and, although I didn’t particularly love the story telling aspects, the images alone make this well worth a watch.
Vampyr
Vampyr
It has great visuals and gothic style, but everything else is a bit dull overall.
Vampyr
Night 2 of 31 Nights of Halloween Vampyr is a dazzling nightmarish dream. There’s a softness to the film, which becomes quite hypnotic, as if we are all under the spell of the vampire as well. It’s clear this film was made during the awkward phase, being created during the transition from silent films to the talkies, which makes for a much more surreal, nearly silent, film that doesn’t entirely know what it is, but adds to the grandeur of the surrealism. This is such a quick film, but still manages to pull you in and never let go.

Vampyr
to sleepy to give this a good review but real good gothic/expressionist vibes here, plot may be a bit loose and thin but the sort of dreamlike feel it has makes up for that so I can’t help but give points for that.
Vampyr
I wish I liked this more. it didn't really catch my interest that much, even if it is about vampires. i do need to rewatch this on a projector. also what's with edging when he's reading the book
Vampyr
I admit the ending left me somewhat confused, but I really enjoyed the whole vibe and atmosphere of the film. The use of shadows, the translucent effect on some characters at a certain point of the film, and the way the film managed to convey this eerie and grim atmosphere was honestly really impressive, even more so for a film that's almost 100 years old. Also quite enjoyed the way most of the exposition is done through that little book. ChiAollenge 2026 (https://boxd.it/R7raO)
Vampyr
Watched the 73 mins version, so I don't know if the restoration actually cut an informative scene because the plot gets confusing in the second half. The body separation and famous coffin scene which are good for shock value, just took me out of the film. They raised more questions than it was ready to answer. But then again, that's where the opening exposition comes in that states: "....have made him a dreamer, for whom the boundary between the real and the unreal has become dim," which, in parts, ensures that such an ending can exist with little to no blame in that area, because the lines had always been blurred and, in that way, I knew what I was getting myself into. Maybe the ending will grow on me on a re-watch, but as of now, not that big of a fan. That window scene with the face was cool, though. On to the more positive part of this "review": loved the first half of this moody, gothic story. Its masterful play with light and shadow clearly stands out and remains impressive. Where, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari's set gave that film the feeling of a moving painting, here, it is Carl Theodor Dreyer's camera that achieves the same, by its precise movements that capture, at times, the mechanically theatrical yet subdued performances of Julian West and Rena Mandel, who portray its inhabitants.
Vampyr
Vampyr is a dream-like experience. It is one of the most untraditional films I have ever seen. It gave me big David Lynch vibes. The story is all over the place, it's hard to tell what's real and what's not, and the characters all have a weird way of using dialogue. Characters appear out of nowhere and some things aren't explained. Dreyer wants the viewer to feel disoriented while watching this movie, unable to decipher fact from fiction. In those regards, it feels just like a dream. It's very, very atmospheric. There are some really bizarre scenes in this movie. On my first watch, I did not know what to think of it. Now, I recognize the genius of Vampyr. I recommend it to anyone that wants to watch something experimental, daunting, and out of their comfort zone. 9/10
