Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy
Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy had to tread very carefully, as this documentary does go into some very touchy water, and I am very glad to see that the filmmakers approached this documentary the way they did. Rather than making a documentary about the history of cocaine, it dives into the social ramifications of the introduction of this drug to the general public, and how minority communites are still being affected by what happened nearly 40 years ago. What is very refreshing about this film is that it is not a “Say no to drugs” PSA, but rather informs of the history of cocaine distribution within the United States, showing how devastating this drug has been toward minority communites specifically. It treats those being intereviewed with a lot of respect, since their stories being told are very important and very relevant to today’s society. It’s a soul-crushing documentary at times, which leads to moments that are eye-opening, certainly casting a shadow on the CIA and their involvement with Guatemala. This is a very quick documentary to get through, but proves its point concisely and gives audiences the chance to take a step back and look at the history of the war on drugs.
