the greatest thing ever genuinely.

ACTIONx52(023) (https://letterboxd.com/allbeef/list/actionx52023/) #9 of 52 | Watch an action film with a mind-bending story. While not entirely "mind-bending", it's got a decent story that certainly reels you in for most of the film. It's just always such a treat to watch anything with Denzel.
Déjà Vu
“I’d try.” Following up Tony Scott’sEnemy of the State withDÉJÀ VU was a great decision. Two films that mirror Scott’s hope and paranoia regarding the surveillance state. Enemy came across as a jaded airport novel spy thriller, one that highlighted the everyman’s fear of constantly being watched by the state, the abject horror of and indignation at the state depriving us of privacy. Flipping to the other side of the coin,Déjà Vuis five years post-9/11 and the Patriot Act. One year post Katrina. Scott’s worst nightmares have manifested and come true. Yet this film is not cynical. It’s a film preoccupied with reaction, response, and consequence. More specifically, it’s about being proactive, about preventing and preparing for the worst, and that includes the worst of ourselves. There is no future, no reality, except for the one we choose to allow to take root. Everything we did yesterday matters today, will matter tomorrow—even the smallest choice, the most inconsequential action, can shape what comes next. For better or worse. Tragedy, government corruption, and bad actors will always be something we as a collective must concern ourselves with. And that knowledge is not an excuse to do nothing. It’s the reason to try. Kind of hilarious that Jim Caviezel eventually became his character in real life.
Déjà Vu
There's no director quite like Tony Scott, who can so acutely capture the indomitable human spirit on film—the conviction to defy fate, the need to do good, and the desire to right your wrongs. Underneath Deja Vu's high-octane action and energetic sci-fi bonanza lies a deeply altruistic message about fighting for humanity and taking destiny into your own hands. "You can save her." Ashamedly, Tony Scott's filmography has been a bit on my blindside until recently, and Deja Vu marks the second Denzel Washington and Tony Scott collaboration I've seen (my first being Man on Fire). Suffice it to say, this is one of the best director/actor pairings I've had the pleasure of experiencing in a very long time, and I'm excited to explore more of it. Denzel Washington is simply one of the greatest actors of our generation, and the late, great Tony Scott is a master of his craft and together, these two are simply magical. Real, honest to God, visceral filmmaking. This is what movie making is all about.
