V/H/S/94

My hot take in the community seems to be "found footage as a concept is good but in execution usually sucks, erratic camerawork at best doesn't give you a headache but still prevents you from seeing shit, and in general you could just do better, even as a first-time filmmaker on a budget of Nothing" To that end, and as would be expected by that statement, V/H/S isn't what I'd consider a good franchise or one that I like! The first one got off to a rocky start, the second one was singlehandedly salvaged by Timo Tjahjanto's incredible Safe Haven segment, and the less said or thought about Viral the better By mostly jettisoning the shitty shaky-cam stylings of the first three (there's only really two or three brief instances of that shit and one of them is gotten out of the way in the first segment, thankfully) and bringing back Tjahjanto for another directed segment, V/H/S/94 was already my favorite V/H/S film in the series well before the end credits finally rolled, helped further by my not hating any of the segments for the first time in the series (and a rare time in a horror anthology especially) The first segment, Chloe Okuno's Storm Drain, gets off to a fairly solid start as a local reporter investigates the rumors of a sighting of a "rat man" in a sewer. The rumors are true but also less simple than one would expect Having just watched (and loved) Simon Barrett's Seance two days ago, I was happy to see him direct a segment here. The second tape played to the audience, The Empty Wake, takes more time than any other to really get going but is pretty satisfying when it finally does, showing why you really don't want to be stuck at an otherwise-empty funeral gathering during a storm with a dead body you're not entirely sure is dead As with V/H/S/2, the highlight for me here is Tjahjanto's contribution, the following The Subject about a mad scientist trying to combine human and machine. An homage to Shinya Tsukamoto's work, this goes absolutely batshit and is all the better for not looking away from it The final tape, Ryan Prows' Terror, is a neat/occasionally funny piece about an armed white male militia going to war with vampires The wraparound (Holy Hell), directed by Jennifer Reeder and depicting a SWAT team investigating this cult of "junkies" but only finding bodies and tapes, is my least favorite segment in the film. In the interest of being positive because her name did have my attention more than anyone but Tjahjanto's here when this first was announced, I do hope some people who see this and have never heard of Reeder in particular end up checking out her Knives And Skin feature, currently available to stream on Hulu. A slow weird indie mystery I thought was alright at the time I first viewed it, have continued to think about and grow on since, and want to give a second chance to fully appreciate (maybe even love) sometime soon when I don't have new stuff to focus on, I still look forward to seeing what she does next, albeit in feature form again if not anthology-wraparound/short style So yeah, TL;DR V/H/S/94 is the best V/H/S yet, Tjahjanto is still the best director they've gotten for these, and watch Knives And Skin. October off to a good start in my opinion!

Given the "year" theming, I guess I was looking for something a little more haphazard, less polished. The funeral wake one probably came the closest to the mood I was expecting. Oh and Raatma cool.

"BANGSAT, MATI LU NGENTOT!" The curse above is the strongest curse I have ever heard from an Indonesian actor, they rarely curse so freely. This movie is actually quite disappointing from the two V/H/S movies I've seen. The segment I like the most is Storm Drain "Rat Man", the segment "The Subject" is actually good but there is still something missing and in my opinion it is not as gory as I expected.

this was better than the first 3 V/H/S films the acting in the wraparound story was subpar my favorite segment is either the storm drain/raatma one (btw wtf is raatma?) or the video game style cyborg rampage.

This was one wild ride! But man, I had a lot of fun watching this! It feels like a continuation of the first two films, being in the same vein aesthetically, as well as creatively. I’m not too sure how big of a fan I am if this overarching story about the impact of the videos, but I can overlook that in the end. I’m very excited for the new installation into the series, and had a lot of fun finally getting to catch up on this series.

It started out really good but kept going on...and on...and on... There's some really great stuff here connected to a messy film. The effects are incredible and the 90's VHS look is great. "The Empty Wake" was easily the best part. It's build up is really good. I also love the face melting bit. I'm not a fan of the main plot that connects all these shorts and "The Subject" (while really cool) feels vastly different from the others It did give me the heebie jeebies at times but besides that, it was just okay
