Speed Racer
Speed Racer was put back in a theater nearby so I took the opportunity to see it, especially since it had been getting a lot of attention on Twitter. I went in expecting myself to absolutely love this film, and while I still believe Speed Racer is good, it's not the masterpiece I was expecting. In fact, a lot of the film felt fake. Fictional films are fake (no way), but I always felt that films were meant to heighten reality while using the tools that reality offers. So when most of the locations in this film have a shitty green screen, it's quite disappointing. I also never loved the idea of things looking bad on purpose, it feels like a gimmick, which might be why I dislike campy films. However, this world also brings a lot of something that I deeply admire. Personality. I will never tell anyone that Speed Racer is a bad movie or that I didn't like it because this film gushes with it's own distinct personality through the incredible performances of , lighting, colors, and editing. While I might not always love the choices made in the film, it's still a fun watch. Do you think you made a mistake? Hiding the truth from them? If I did, it's a mistake I have to live with.

Revisiting a favorite -- this flick runs on the power of PB&J's! Funny to have timed Moulin Rouge just yesterday, absolutely priming us for this exaltation of digital composition and saturation. Utter satisfaction from a candy dimension, wouldn't change a goddamn thing.

Qualquer lógica de espaço, de começo e término de um plano, de continuidade e de estrutura da imagem é contorcionada, destruída e reformulada constantemente pelas irmãs Wachowski em um curto-circuito catártico entre o cartunesco ingênuo da animação com o live-action e misturando cor, movimento e temporalidade nesse ritmo frenético despojado de qualquer ordem. É uma decupagem em constante metamorfose, consciente da base infantilizada do seu material-fonte e capaz de entregar uma obra que cative o interesse do público infantil e adulto simultaneamente. Essas transições da montagem conferem fluidez ao dinamismo das corridas e trazem esse movimento acelerado dos carros para a linguagem. E por mais agitadas que sejam as transições de Speed Racer, as cineastas encontram um espaço significativo para que os close-ups operem essa dramaturgia familiar singela sobre uma família unida pela expressividade da arte - aqui, associada as corridas. Vai de pop art até os cartoons da Hanna Barbera e sem abnegar da frontalidade burlesca que encara o seu universo particular em momento algum. Indescritível.

Speed Racer is one of the first films that I actively remember seeing in the theaters. Being 11, I finally was at the age where I could fully appreciate going to the movies, where I really knew what was going on, that I could pay attention and understand everything that was happening, just having a better understanding of the movie. Around this time was when I really started getting interested into film, watching films that other kids my age weren't watching. Speed Racer was one of those films that, at that age, I thought was just for little kids, that it wasn't going to be a good film. I enjoyed it back then, but now as an adult, upon revisiting the film, I can't believe that I didn't love this film when I was younger. The Wachowski sisters throw you into an extremely vivid and stunning world, relying heavily on computer generated backdrops that make this film so beautiful. The locations that were created for this film were nothing less than stunning. It's rare to see films that are almost completely done with computer generated backgrounds, unless you're Robert Rodriguez or the Wachowski sisters, so it's a shock to see a film that feels so fake, yet is as beautiful as this film is. Speed Racer is just pure entertainment, from the beginning to the end. There were a couple scenes that honestly made me cringe, specifically when Spirtle goes through montages, but this is a kids film, so it's understandable to have some sequences in the film that are supposed to just be fun. Speed Racer surprisingly is one of the greatest films that I have ever seen, and that's a big statement, but this film is honestly extraordinary. I can't wait to revisit this film again and get to pay attention to more of the details that I missed on this watch.

I forget just how much fun this film actually is. It’s a blast from start to finish, and has a charm to it that is undeniable. One of my childhood favorites.
