SPOOKTOBER #15 I really didn’t expect the story to turn out like this, and the whole movie made me feel uneasy. It was disturbing, dark, and incredibly creepy; the effect really sticks in your mind.

Em uma propriedade no interior da Argentina, dois irmãos encontram um corpo mutilado por alguma coisa. Eles descobrem que a pessoa morta iria encontrar uma moradora da mesma propriedade, lá eles descobrem que o filho dessa moradora está possuido, apodrecido e a decisão de se livrar do corpo desencadeiam eventos sobrenaturais e brutais na cidade local. When The Evil Lurks (Cuando acecha la maldad) é um terror sobrenatural de possessão que possui uma identidade tão única que você facilmente consegue distinguir ele de vários outros do mesmo gênero e com propostas parecidas, mas que não tem metade do brilho desse aqui. A começar pelo cenário, uma região rural que gira em torno de uma pequena cidade no interior da Argentina e todo o contexto onde o conhecimento de entidades sobrenaturais e brutais é senso comum, mas que nem todos levam a sério até que tudo começa a dar errado. A narrativa de When The Evil Lurks se propõe não em assustar de forma barata e gratuita o espectador, mas chocar. A grafia do longa serve para exemplificar como seu antagonista sem rosto é basicamente um vírus, um vírus que não se deve combater com violência, nem com imprudência. Muito me agrada a forma como a ameaça rapidamente se estabelece e cria um leque de situações que movem os personagens quase que de forma irracional. A condução do filme não te deixa respirar, até em momentos de desenvolvimento e exposição, que em alguns momentos são didática e freia os momentos de tensão (coisa que acontece com bastantes frequência no terceiro ato), não te deixa respirar direito. A cada novo momento o filme te pega de surpresa com alguma reviravolta chocante. Se esse filme possui algum defeito, eu diria que é o terceiro ato apressado e, não de forma agradável, confuso. A todo momento o final do filme quer que você acredite que algo errado está acontecendo, ao ponto de que você já entende o que está acontecendo e só espera que os personagens acompanhe, sem falar da situação Patati Patatá do final que te deixa mais irritado do que tudo, é um momento de burrice que não cabe e num filme onde todas as ações pareciam verossimeis... Não casam com a atitude final do protagonista. No mais When The Evil Lurks é um filme de terror que diz respeito ao gênero ao qual ele é atribuído e não tem medo de ser um filme de terror. Num mundo onde o terror de fantasia precisa mascarar sua natureza com 40 mensagens diferentes e alguns até tem vergonha de serem de terror, esse aqui é um filme de terror que não só tem orgulho de ser um filme de terror, como exagera em seus aspectos e abraça com força a fantasia aterrorizante de sua natureza, sem dúvidas um dos melhores filmes de terror desse ano!!!

Last year I saw The Sadness for the first time. 3 years ago I saw Come And See for the first time. 4 years ago, I saw the original Martyrs for the first time The things all four of these films have in common is that visually they have multiple images that remain burned into my brain to this day, and thematically they have lessons taught, words spoken or left unspoken, that have stuck with me ever since. Is When Evil Lurks as physically vicious for as extended a period of time as either of them? No. Is it at least as dire and shaken to its core, in a way that demands you be so too and impacts you enough to be regardless of your desire or mood going in? Absolutely A kid gets possessed and spends a year bloated, dying, suffering, because his parents dared put their hope into others, having reported it to a police system that doesn't care and bystanders who either disbelieve or are waiting on someone else to make the first move. Two brothers, upon hearing this at last after discovering a severed body nearby, decide to act if nobody else will, and inadvertently cause the demon to spread throughout their town The help they enlist along the way believes the people in charge intentionally looked the other way for land-owning purposes (if the neighbors are spooked they'll sell and leave). They sure wouldn't be the first, so it's a valid thought to have. This is a town full of people who either don't care, or are so paranoid because they care too much. A place abandoning itself full of people abandoned by others. These are the inhabitants of a broken town, of a broken world. What havoc wouldn't win out here? Life has had many tests even here (9/11, Sandy Hook, climate change) that we've failed, whether short or long; when you even fail the short and easy tests, what hope is there to fare better on the long ones? And when the easy ones are "love or hate", what hope is there when the wrong one is consistently the winner? Young and old, kids and adults, humans and animals, do horrible things here. It never goes as far for as long as in The Sadness, or Come And See, or Martyrs; it doesn't need to to still bring the dread. These are your loved ones. Your old that specifically names the names of demons despite that being a rule you're supposed to never do, that she says seconds ago never to do but can't remember saying it. Your kids that can be possessed but still know enough to look scared when they need to to get what they want. Your pet that blends in with the herd, and when you point a gun at it to make it stop its ways, will lean in begging for the shot. Everything in you says this will, should, end differently. That's the hope Demian Rugna also directed Terrified, the 2017 instant hit also available to stream on Shudder. When I'm finally able to breathe out again, I realize I get it now. In a year that also had Beaten To Death, this is the hardest film to get through. I've seen more horrifying in general; I haven't seen much more upsetting. Instinct is to say "God help me for wanting to ever see this again", but multiple times over these 90 minutes is the phrase "God is dead" uttered; they may be more correct than they know. On the way out we're marked with a reminder of what we've done, and how we've been, that can't be washed away so easily

Hooptober 8/31 ********************* Gripping in the way it goes against the grain of how these viral tales, or horrific moments, play out. Felt like a point-by-point take down of the Hollywood "apocalypse" ideal... with every individual fear-motivated action and reaction only widening the wound. I know there were 'rules' and 'lore' in the snapshots we get about what's going on, but those only ever seemed a stop gap (practiced by reformed charlatans) to something that'd been gaining strength for generations. Here's our world, where any potential for collective support, response, acceptance has been slowly gutted and abandoned by the wayside; insert the creeping physical/spiritual force of your choice into that fertile soil. Your heroic father act already too little, too late. Your guns, perhaps even modernity itself, only enhancing the issue.
