War of the Worlds

Good suspense/tension in the second half, and an authentically nightmarish cinematic run through chaos in the streets in the first half. Basically if this had a stronger plot, or stronger characters/less annoying kids to make what good was there more manageable and easier to deal with for a 2-hour runtime, this could have been a great adaptation instead of just alright. As is (for War of the Worlds and for Spielberg), I was left unimpressed

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds

Surprisingly I hadn’t seen this film fully, having seen a majority of the film (the ending half). It’s honestly a lot of fun, even if the ends falls flat in the end. It doesn’t feel like a typical film from Spielberg, but man, I had a lot of fun with these characters, with an opening that will haunt me. Not a perfect film by any means, but one that still has a lot to offer in the entertainment department.

War of the Worlds

59/100 What started off as a really promising sci-fi action film; kind of a Children of Men setting with a 2000s classic plot point got progressively worse over the second half. The visual effects were insane for the time and a lot of them surprisingly hold up well even today. The action was good, the idea was good but the choices were poor. What was even the point of Tim Robbins? And Robbie I was defending you when you were yelling at Cruise but the way he abandoned them and found his way home, what a fucking prick; he should’ve died. Tom Cruise did some running but I’d say this film had very little input from him because he wouldn’t make something that’s all over the place like this. The worst Spielberg film I’ve seen and it’s been a long time since I saw a film of his. Also, what the hell happened to Dakota Fanning’s career man. She has by far the best body of work I’ve seen from a child actor and mind you sharing the screen with the biggest actors, she’s stolen the show almost every time most notably with Denzel in Man on Fire. The trajectory she was on should’ve made her one of the biggest actresses in the world right now but we hear and see much more of Elle than her. I hope she gets her big breakthrough, there’s still plenty of time.

War of the Worlds

There are bits and pieces here that I like, but it just never really gels together in a way that I find satisfying. This washed out period for Spielberg is one of his less interesting to me, but he still knows what to do to make the film move.

War of the Worlds

For the first hour or so, WAR OF THE WORLDS is a compelling alien invasion film, laced with tension and unbridled panic. Humanity devolves in an instant. No better than animals when faced with imminent death, killing each other, and betraying one another in order to survive. It’s good stuff. Much of the imagery Spielberg puts on screen is terrifying, reminiscent of a war torn country side. Tom’s performance is great and he anchors the film with his leading man charisma. That all being said, the film feels very dated as it is clearly preoccupied with 9/11 in very unsubtle and tedious ways. Much of it felt distracting and took my attention away from the narrative. I doubt it was necessary to directly rip imagery from the September attacks themselves to invoke the kind of terror that would come from such a sudden invasion. In addition, the son only being here to be as a stand in for the thousands who joined the military “to get back at them” was beyond grating and the first instance of this happening was when the film started to lose steam for me. Cut him out the film and nothing would change, in fact, it probably would have been better. Overall, it’s an alright flick. But H.G. Wells’War of the Worlds will definitely be adapted again one day, and it won’t be hard to top this version at all.
