Squeezes every ounce from its premise into various great and even beautiful scenes, but maybe struggles to say much more

Portraying familial bonds is director Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s bread and butter. It’s been clear time and time again that he knows how to convey deep human emotion in his films, while staying grounded within reality.Brokeris in that same vein, piecing together a story of giving up family, as well as choosing who your family is. He strings these ideas into a beautiful tapestry, vibrant with life and bursting with raw emotion. It was surprising to see a little more of a “thriller” aspect within the film, but I’m glad to see something a little different, since it really did see this film apart from his previous work I’ve seen. Brokermay be a slow burn, but it’s one that pays off in the end, just as Kore-eda’s other films do. I love the way he manages to create these small worlds that feel so grounded in reality, as if these are documentaries, rather than feature films. This truly is a great film, certainly a highlight of the year.

thank you for being born Kore-eda could direct a film that is totally Korean, or French like his The Truth but you would recognize that this is a Kore-eda film; a drama with little bit of crime, melodramatic yet proportional, a family without real family but a found family.

the shots, the performances by korea's well-loved artists. this was so relaxing to watch while also compelling me to love the inconvenient found-family that gave me a bittersweet ending.

In Broker, Hirokazu Kore-eda once again showing the dysfunctionality of a family and this time, questioning every ethics & morality of a mother’s choice. A stunning road movie led by Song Kang Ho’s effortless performance & Lee Ji Eun’s knock-out big screen debut!

My 1000th film on Letterboxd I want to give this 5 stars. But it’s a film I want to watch again. This is my first movie from Japanese Director Hirokazu Kore-eda. I’ve heard his films usually centre around a family/a group of people who come together in crisis, and this was one of those. Despite the subject matter, the cinematography and writing create a melancholic atmosphere. It’s comforting in a sense. Song Kang-ho is one of the greatest Korean actors, and his performance here is great. I think IU gives the best performance in this movie; however this isn’t one of those where one person stands out. They all complement each other, making each other better. Sort of like a family. Absurdly realistic, melancholic, heartwarming, and beautifully directed.
