Equilibrium
Holy shit, this movie ruled. Never subtle in its storytelling, but I think that is where one of its biggest strengths lies. The action is very well done, and it is fun to see a pre-mainstream, pre-Oscar Christian Bale in a movie like this. The parallels to The Matrix are unavoidable, but honestly, I don't care.

❝Mankind united with infinitely greater purpose in pursuit of war than he ever did in pursuit of peace.❞ 𐄁─────⋆⁺‧₊☽ ◯ ☾₊‧⁺⋆─────𐄁 Equilibrium certainly isn't presenting any particularly new concepts, but its execution isn't too bad. I've had it in my watchlist for a very long time because I heard that the music video for ATTEZ's song 'Guerrilla' is inspired by this film, so it was pretty exciting to hear the original 'The disease is human emotion'. The main issue I had was with the suppression of emotions, because to me it seemed like everyone was displaying some kind of feeling or other. Anger is still an emotion, and I definitely saw plenty of it in characters taking drugs to prevent it. The 1984-esque masthead figure being fake was a plot twist I unfortunately saw coming the moment I saw the frankly shoddy CGI face. Acting-wise, Christian Bale gave the strongest performance, and looked sleek in the long, black coats reminiscent of Keanu's drip in The Matrix. Taye Diggs was also pretty good as the secondary antagonist, but Angus Macfadyen wasn't very convincing as the main villain. I wish Sean Bean got more screen-time instead, because he had more charisma within his meagre 10 minutes than Macfadyen had the entire film. All in all, I don't think I'll be rewatching Equilibrium any time soon, but I do think it's worth a watch if you like dystopian, sci-fi media. → film-related note: christian bale is just so 😩🫶 especially in that black leather 🤪
