Kristen Stewart gives arguably her best performance as Princess Diana, with stunning visuals and emotional scenes. The costume design in this was absolutely perfect, with many stunning outfits donned by Diana. The film is elegantly shot, has beautiful scenes of food especially and the story is as clever as it is tragic. What let’s this down for me is how’s little the film really achieves. Growing up in England everyone already knows the story, Diana good Royal Family bad. It’s something I’ve known all my life, that Diana is a larger than life figure which many women aspire to be. The film doesn’t really present anything new or exciting. There is also a lot of cringey moments. But don’t get me wrong, this is a good film with fantastic acting, design and execution. I just didn’t really feel very much while watching it.

Pense num filme que eu fui disposto a criticar negativamente pois, superficialmente falando, parece muito um filme que trata de uma situação de coitadismo de uma princesa... Mas imagina o choque quando eu estava genuinamente engajado emocionalmente. Eu fui do riso as lágrimas, rapidamente. Eu me peguei lembrando de Priscilla da Sofia Coppola, filme esse que é muito bom, mas que não tem uma montagem que o torne melhor, Spencer não. Spencer é uma experiência narrativa que tem um dinamismo na direção que a montagem só reforça isso. Seja demonstrando um momento de instabilidade mental, o que leva a uma consequência física ou em um momento de ternura com Diana e os filhos, dando luz a experiências sobrenaturais quando faz comparações entre a princesa e Ana Bolena. A cena dela brincando com as crianças depois de um jantar desconfortável me fez sentir uma felicidade trágica, Kristen Stewart entrega bem a nuance de um meio sorriso que pode tanto significar tristeza como felicidade e o final que vai do trágico pro redentor é algo que te tira o fôlego, não é uma pessoa que afeta Diana, mas todo o ambiente é nocivo e isso é muito bem transmitido. O medo de que a única fulga possível seja um fim é algo que é genuinamente assustador, mas um alívio ao mesmo tempo, porém o filme dá um final brevemente feliz para a protagonista de Kristen Stewart.

Em contraste com Jackie, a direção do chileno Pablo Larraín em Spencer é tão fascinada com a simbologia fantasmagórica dos seus signos imagéticos consumidos pelo requinte estético que não sobra espaço para ressoar o seu efeito no espectador. A opressão do cenário real e as pressões impostas a Diana - vivida por uma Kristen Stewart no auge de seu talento e domínio dramático - atua nas superfície, ofuscada pelo glamour da fotografia calculada e espectral e pela trilha berrante de Jonny Greenwood. Falta um cenário menos tecnicista e indiferente para potencializar ao lado de Stewart as ânsias e conflitos de Lady Diana. No fim, resta o enfado de uma obra pouco comprometida com sua força e mais interessada em seu deslumbre. Love the costume and Princess Diana attitude here, Kristen Stewart really potrayed her well. Princess Diana giving zero fucks through the movie and i like to watch it. May you happily rest in peace Queen.

Sublime at every level. Stewart embodies Diana Spencer, showing her prowess as an actor, delivering the strongest performance of the year. Truly a remarkable film that will need many more visits to completely appreciate. That being said, Spencereasily is one of the strongest contenders for best film of the year - this is why I watch movies. Watching a film like this re-ignites my love for the art form, and has lit a fire under me to get back into the habit of watching more.
