The Dark and the Wicked
It took me a bit to actually process this film, a gloomy and bleak delve into grief, The Dark and the Wicked indeed is a wicked little film, which manages to get under your skin and linger. It’s not an enjoyable film, to say the least, and can feel like you’re trudging along with the slow pace, but if you are willing to put in the effort, this film is worth the watch. While it may not have the normal scares that a horror film would have, it has the psychological impact that will stay with you much longer than a jump scare would. Graphic at times, and haunting the rest of the time, this is an indie film that deserves a lot of praise. It’s a shame that most people are going to watch this film and dislike it, since it is a slow-burn and doesn’t follow the typical notes that a horror film would. It’s unique in its plot, as well as pacing, making it one of the standout horror films of the year. There were times where I wasn’t quite sure why the filmmakers decided to do what they did, but I do give them props for their effects and ability to create a truly bone-chilling atmosphere. The Dark and the Wicked truly is a unique experience that I hope more people will be willing to give a chance. I had seen people talk about this film on TikTok, saying that it was the scariest film that they had ever seen. It may not be that, but it certainly is one of the most disturbing in recent years. This is the kind of horror film that makes me fall in love with the genre all over again, and I cannot wait to see what else these indie filmmakers have to offer for the genre.
