Women in Love

“We ought to swear to love each other, you and I. Implicitly, perfectly. Finally.” Alan Bates and Oliver Reed’s wrestling scene might be homoeroticism in its purest form—cinematically speaking. It’s fraternal, it’s tense, it’s sensual, it’s masculine. I could go on but I don’t think I’d find the right word to describe it. To describe how perfect of a scene it is. Revelatory, maybe. For a film that came out of late 60s Britain, it’s infinitely more interesting than it has any right to be. Though, that may just be attributed to Ken Russell’s bold, vibrant and scintillating directorial vision. Russell gets great and nuanced performances from all his actors but particularly from Glenda Jackson and Oliver Reed who have an infectious charisma about them. It helps that they’re both playing compelling characters. Definitely looking to check out more from everyone involved here!
