The Woman in Black

This has maybe one of the best atmospheres of a film I’ve ever seen; engulfed in a dark, gloomy, gothic aesthetic that really gives you a sense for the setting. Great tension building and plenty of genuinely chilling moments, although a few too many jump scares bc after the first few they become predictable. Perfect spooky season watch, highly recommend this during a cloudy/overcast day.

The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black is one of the rare PG-13 horror films that I actually adore. For the most part, PG-13 horror films rely on jump scares and nothing else, getting in a cheap scare to a wider audience without pushing the boundaries of horror. Here with The Woman in Black, there isn't anything revolutionary about the film, as it is a typical haunted house film, but the way that the film is done is so much better than what has been coming out, it's amazing to see a film that is actually terrifying. And I mean terrifying in many different ways, as this film uses many different techniques to make the audience terrified. As per usual, there are jump scares, which I actually don't mind, as they really do come at good times when the tension is built up perfectly to allow a very effective jump scare. The atmosphere throughout is dreadful, the whole film seems to be seeping with dread. Mix this in with the stunning cinematography and haunting score, and you get a horror film for the ages, a horror film that will actually scare audiences, rather than just make them jump. I'm a strong advocate for The Woman in Black, as it is one of those rare gems in the horror genre that also happens to be rated PG-13. I really wish the sequel lived up to how great this film is, since the sequel truly is a terrible film. Forget about that film and keep to this one, as it really is one of the better horror films to have come out somewhat recently.

The Woman in Black

What I really like about The Elman in Black is that the movie felt scary. Granted, it did use jump scares as its main scare factor, but it still felt scary. Last night, I read The Woman in Black. Inwas hoping it would be scary, but it wasn't. Naturally, I wanted to watch the movie. The movie is better than the book. You actually feel scared while watching it, unlike the book. The only thing Inwouls have changed in the film was the end, since I prefer the ending of the book to the movie's ending. But still, this movie gives you the chills. Tomorrow is the day to tackle The Woman in Black 2.

The Woman in Black

A tense, atmospheric adaptation of a terrifying novel that still stuns to this day. I tend to harp on PG-13 horror, since a vast majority of them are disappointing, but this certainly is one of the rarities.

The Woman in Black

Genuinely frightening at times. Incredible atmosphere. Some very solid acting, especially from Ciaran Hinds who is marvelous in everything. Daniel Radcliffe does a great job in this as well, it probably helps that he LOOKS very much of the time period. The horror is executed well, with some solid scares sprinkled through the haunting feeling of the movie. There’s probably a little too much “Dan Radcliffe looks around” going on. A slight trim wouldn’t have hurt, but at 95 minutes it’s already a tight runtime that doesn’t feel like it overstays its welcome. Some legitimately heartbreaking moments throughout as well. Really good film, worth the time for sure.

The Woman in Black

#15 of 31 Days of Madness: October 2017 (https://boxd.it/1fIvM) A fairly creepy yet insufficient ghost story fit with Gothic sights and sounds—horrific screams weep from close but unseen distances, buried in the mist that surrounds the film's haunted house. However underwhelming it is in the fullest atmosphere and scares—despite one rather outstanding fright—The Woman in Black is a somewhat entrancing TV movie, spine-chilling in certain scenes and uninteresting in others; the standard cinematography can weigh it down at times, not to mention the sluggish pace and lack of mystery. Despite all its troubles, this film has a pretty exceptional lead performance that helps the mystery move along quite briskly—the many instances of the woman in black seen standing still in the background is another thing that makes the film interesting to watch unfold, thanks to the figures creepy demeanor. The ending is horrific and chilling, and perhaps the best moment of the movie—somewhat summarizing the film as one unsettling and then some experience of malicious exhibits in the corner of your eye. 3.2/5
