This isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but this is a nuts psychedelic foreign animated classic that I really do believe everyone should watch at least once, if only to appreciate that stuff like this can even be made

Women are always the ones left behind to suffer.❞ ∘₊──── • ♧ • ✧ • ♧ • ────₊∘ I have very mixed emotions when it comes to Belladonna of Sadness. While the animation style is a gorgeous mix of modernist and Art Noveau watercolours, and the film features a great soundtrack, it doesn't detract from the fact that rape isn't art. There's nothing 'beautiful' about it, and I really don't think there's any semblance of feminism here. It's clearly written by a man; Jeanne endures so much assault and pain, I don't believe giving her soul to the Devil is done through her own volition. The imagery isn't very subtle as well, and in the end it all just produces a very uncomfortable watching experience. I personally wouldn't recommend this, and I don't think I'll be revisiting it in the future either.

“who says anger and hatred are ugly?” creative and mesmerizing and utterly disturbing... honestly this is the animation style i had always envisioned for the darker grimm/andersen fairytales (some favorite scenes in terms of artistic portrayal: first few seconds of the ritual rape; psychedelic “hell” sequence; black death sequence; execution march) + execution soundtrack i wish i knew enough about theology & medieval french history to comment on the more intricate aspects of catholicism (and the rebellion against it) in this film... the art was just soooooo good at representing themes of power, gender, morality, salvation/corruption, etc. this animation seriously compels a frame by frame analysis of artistic direction in relation to larger historical/literary themes much to think about... someday i‘ll dive deeper into this when i’m equipped with more contextual knowledge

The darkness invites and seduces me. Spit on by all. I want to become a horrifying woman, i want people to turn away in horror when i pass by in the street, i don’t want to forget anger and hatred! Who says anger and hatred are ugly? You are more beautiful than god. A Tragédia de Belladonna é um filme que foi muito censurado e é considerado misógino pela quantidade de nudez e sexo presente na obra. Mas se você acha que nudez e sexo é intrinsicamente fetichista e objectificador, isso meramente reflete a misoginia internalizada em você, não da obra do filme. Com exceção do estupro no inicio do filme, todas as demais cenas de ''sexo'' ou ''nudez'' do filme são entre a Belladonna e o diabo (e o diabo se apresenta falando que ele é ela), ou Belladonna em orgias que ela participa por vontade própria, libertando a população da vila do patriarcado por meio da sexualidade feminina. Existe sim sensualidade nesse filme, mas é uma sensualidade celebrada; o diabo não é uma entidade externa, mas sim a própria Jeanne e seus desejos reprimidos. Quando se mostra uma cena dele transando com ela, aquilo é meramente a Jeanne se masturbando e tomando controle do seu próprio prazer, não um ato de submissão para uma figura masculina. O filme é uma representação da busca de Jeanne pelo próprio prazer depois do estrupo que ocorre no início do filme. Por exemplo, todo o enredo do filme, tal como é, gira em torno de atos de violência contra as mulheres. Entidades políticas, sobrenaturais e humanas, todas participam ou na violação literal da protagonista, Jeanne, ou violentamente a reprimem de alguma forma. As alucinações, música e imagens malucas geram uma cinestesia, isto é, a trama é exposta não somente com estímulos verbais, mas também com música e cenas de forte teor emotivo, permitindo que os expectadores entrem em contato diretamente com as emoções das personagens na situação em que estas se encontram. A arte do filme faz jus a um estilo rococó, psicodélico e brutal. Tudo é muito nu e cru.

the most gut wrenching story wrapped in a breathtakingly beautiful animation

psychedelic and utterly disturbing, belladonna of sadness is not a movie for everyone. (this was my mistake bc i didn’t check the trigger warnings before watching this film). after finishing the movie, i felt sick to my stomach. i did not know how i managed to watch this from start to end. it’s insane. the artstyle was otherworldly; it was a mesmerizing watch. though, it almost gave me epilepsy (the black plague scene gave me a massive headache lmao). along with that, the soundtrack was so ethereal. the intro was so fantastical, felt like an old disney film. but, beyond the beauty of the animation lies the juxtaposing, horrifying story of jeanne. especially, the first act. the rape scenes in the first act were revolting, i can see why so many people felt disturbed and disliked the movie because of its apparent romanticization. it doesn’t help either that this was directed and written by men. the scenes were really gruesome and visceral, and, for me, it really captured the suffering of victims of rape (especially when jeanne’s body is depicted to be torn apart in half). i read somewhere in a youtube comment section that they feel that the rape scene both showcases the suffering of the victim and the pleasure the perpetrator gets from said suffering, thus explaining why it feels both painful and somewhat erotic (?) and, i couldn’t agree more. also, i find the ending where jeanne’s spirit apparently inspired the french revolution, which was kind of random imo? but it does add on if one views it in a feminist lens, i guess. i do acknowledge the message of the film and how it’s supposed to show jeanne’s reclaiming of her sexuality and defining herself as more than her trauma through witchcraft (good for her!). overall, the whole movie felt like a whole violation to the senses, both positively and negatively. to me, belladonna of sadness stands at the border between liberating feminist film about the oppression of women in medieval france (and, in general) and exploitative torture porn made-for-the-male-gaze flick. or maybe, one should just accept the story as it is: a tale of a woman robbed of her innocence and her journey to healing/decaying. but, it is to each their own on what are the truest intentions of this film. i feel like i cannot say anything more about it, because i am a man who has not experienced any form of sexual assault. i just know that this movie will always haunt my mind because of how wild and brutal this watch was. hella uncomfortable and very interesting.

Fiquei por volta de um mês sem ver filmes e voltei agora com Belladonna of Sadness, e que escolha foi essa? Justo no Dia das Mulheres, o que pode ser uma escolha muito controversa, mas é assim que a vida funciona. Eu fui alertada de que seria um filme pesado, porém, nada conseguiria me preparar para como isso seria abordado. Filmes que têm seus temas focados em assuntos femininos têm a minha total atenção — a maioria dos meus filmes favoritos giram em torno desses temas —, mas eu não imaginava ver assuntos como estupro como forma de opressão, beleza como um convite para abuso, machismo institucionalizado na religião e a demonização do corpo feminino retratados dessa maneira. Existe quem diga que o filme romantiza esses pontos, no entanto, discordo totalmente. No filme, todas as cenas são estilizadas visualmente, sim, mas com uma carga de desconforto enorme. É uma animação que, sem ser totalmente explicita, consegue mostrar a violência a que corpos femininos são submetidos. É, realmente, uma tragédia como o nome sugere. Você vê como uma sociedade opressora consegue destruir a vida de uma mulher inúmeras vezes e ainda a culpabilizar pela maneira como lida, age e reage a essa mesma destruição. Os moldes usados nas sociedades machistas se utilizam de instituições de poder para continuar com um ciclo infinito de abuso, violência e desmoralização. Nisso, o filme é impecável. O ponto visual é algo próprio, visto que as escolhas estéticas não são apenas únicas e autênticas, como são partes da narrativa. A mudança das cores, as formas e como o movimento consegue trazer tudo o que a trama está propondo colocam um valor ainda maior. Acredito que, por mais que os assuntos sejam pesados, é uma obra relevante, poderosa e impactante.
